As an ardent enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share the exciting news about Over the Hill, a fresh, chic off-road racing game! The creators, Funselektor and Strelka Games, have taken the sophisticated style they mastered in Art of Rally and given it a new lease of life in this rugged terrain adventure.
In a stylish, all-lowercase format as “over the hill,” this upcoming indie racing game is anticipated to resonate with similar themes as 2020’s Art of Rally. The earlier racer from Funselektor gained recognition in the vast indie game landscape due to its sleek design that eliminated unnecessary elements typical in rally racing games. Its controls and vehicle handling remained authentic, mimicking the experience of a simulation racing game. However, Art of Rally offers gameplay from a top-down perspective, allowing players to navigate through lively tracks. Over the Hill adopts many of those design principles and incorporates them into an offroad exploration game reminiscent of MudRunner.
In “Over the Hill”, players traverse various off-road locations linked by portals. This game offers both single-player and cooperative play with up to four participants, and Funselektor has filled each area with numerous challenges to conquer and secret items to discover. Navigation between points isn’t always straightforward due to the game’s day-night cycle, changing weather conditions, and environmental hurdles that may necessitate using specific tools to surmount. Although “Over the Hill” plays differently than “Art of Rally”, Funselektor founder Dune Casu clarified their reasons for choosing this direction for a sequel.
Having spent years crafting games centered around motorsports, I felt it was time to veer off the beaten track and create an immersive world where players could unwind at a leisurely pace,” I mentioned in a press statement. “In essence, this game mirrors the enchanting solitude I encountered while traversing North America in my reliable camper van. There’s an undeniable magic in the wilderness, far from civilization – the tranquility, the symphony of nature, and the absence of distractions from our urban lives. My hope is that this game captures that essence for you.
Over the Hill will launch on PC via Steam sometime in 2025.
