One of the Greatest Crime Thrillers Ever Made Is Back to Amaze Netflix Viewers

A highly acclaimed British crime thriller is coming to Netflix next month. The series, which first aired in 2013, stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman (both known from Doctor Who) as detectives investigating the puzzling death of a young boy.

Viewers will likely identify this series as Broadchurch, given the two main actors. For those unfamiliar, this British crime thriller was hugely popular during its three seasons (2013-2017), and deservedly so. Broadchurch showcased powerful performances from its leads, who played anything but typical police officers. Tennant portrayed a flawed and troubled Detective Inspector, while Colman delivered a deeply realistic performance as a Detective Sergeant whose son was potentially connected to the case.

The discovery of 11-year-old Danny Latimer’s body on a beautiful Dorset beach throws a quiet coastal town into turmoil, attracting both a police investigation and intense media attention. Detective Inspector Alec Hardy arrives to lead the case, taking charge over local Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller, who believes she should have been in charge. Despite their initial friction, Ellie must now work closely with the reserved and often difficult Hardy.

As the investigation into the crime in Broadchurch continues, more and more locals become involved. A telephone engineer becomes a key figure when he reveals a personal connection to the case. Meanwhile, Danny’s family struggles with their grief amidst the intense public scrutiny. When a suspect is arrested and goes to trial, they threaten to reveal hidden secrets about many of the town’s residents.

‘Broadchurch’ Received a Far Inferior Remake in 2014

Following the popularity of Broadchurch internationally, Fox created an American version called Gracepoint in 2014. Chris Chibnall, who also wrote Broadchurch, was the creator, and David Tennant reprised his role, this time as Detective Emmett Carver. Anna Gunn from Breaking Bad played Detective Ellie Miller, delivering a strong performance, though the show as a whole didn’t quite capture the same magic.

Compared to Broadchurch, Gracepoint didn’t have the same emotional impact and honestly felt too much like a copy. It created a strange feeling—almost like a case of mistaken memory—making many viewers wonder why the show was remade if it was so similar to the original. Simply changing the setting from the English coast to Northern California wasn’t enough, and ultimately, Gracepoint didn’t measure up to its inspiration.
