As a movie critic, I’m keeping a close eye on what’s trending, and right now, Netflix has a clear winner. A sequel to one of their biggest successes has shot to the top of the global charts. There are plenty of new and classic films hitting the service this week, but honestly, nothing’s been quite as consistently popular as this one particular movie. It’s really dominating the conversation right now.
Netflix offers a variety of fantasy movies and series, and several have become very popular. Titles like The Witcher, which has a new movie gaining traction, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Damsel, and Troll have all performed well. Troll was a particularly big success, and its upcoming sequel is also proving popular.
According to data from FlixPatrol, Troll 2 is currently the most popular movie on Netflix around the world. The film, a sequel to an earlier fantasy movie, quickly gained a large audience after becoming available to Netflix subscribers on December 1st. It has surpassed Jingle Bell Heist, which is now in second place.
The Troll franchise remains a big success for Netflix. In fact, the 2022 film Troll became Netflix’s most-watched non-English movie ever, racking up 103 million views in its first 91 days, according to Netflix data. It just barely surpassed Under Paris, a shark horror movie that received 102.3 million views.
With Troll 2 currently being the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide, it’s likely to appear on the platform’s list of the most popular foreign-language films. However, there’s a notable difference between Troll 2 and its 2025 sequel, Troll: critics loved Troll, giving it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while Troll 2 didn’t receive the same positive reception.
As of today, critics have given the Troll sequel a 58% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This score could change now that the movie is new, potentially improving to match the first Troll film’s approval rating, though likely not to the extent the filmmakers hoped. Despite the mixed reviews, Troll 2 is already proving popular with viewers on streaming platforms.
The movie Troll 2 brings back actors Nora Tidemann, Andreas Isaksen, and Kristoffer Holm, who team up with a troll to battle another. The first Troll film hinted at a larger story in a post-credits scene, showing a troll rising from a mountain and suggesting the villain would be central to the next installment. The ending of Troll 2 sets the stage for a potential third movie that could conclude the trilogy.
