Mario is the main face of Nintendo, and his games are usually released worldwide. Almost every Mario game that came out in Japan also became available in Western countries. However, there’s one Super Nintendo game that was an exception – it never officially came to America, until recently.
Nintendo recently shared a new promo video on YouTube revealing three classic SNES games now available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The lineup includes *Fatal Fury Special*, the original *Bubsy* game, and most notably, *Mario & Wario*. Released in 1993, *Mario & Wario* surprisingly never made its way to North America, despite already being fully translated into English. It remained largely unknown outside of Japan, with only a small reference in *Super Smash Bros. Melee*. Now, players in America can finally experience it.
Mario & Wario is designed to be played with mouse controls
Mario & Wario was made for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and was one of the few games designed to be played with the SNES Mouse, similar to Mario Paint. This likely explains why it’s only now being released in the West, as the ability to use a mouse with a Joy-Con 2 controller is a key feature of the upcoming Switch 2 console.
Mario & Wario isn’t a traditional jumping game; it’s more like a puzzle game you’d find on a computer. Wario, as usual, causes trouble by dropping things on Mario’s head, making him wander around without your direct control. You play as the fairy Wanda and help Mario by building or removing platforms, moving obstacles, and clearing enemies from his way. Your goal is to guide Mario safely to Luigi at the end of each level.
You can now play Mario & Wario on the Switch 2 through the Super Nintendo – Nintendo Classics app. It’s free to download and play if you have a Switch Online subscription. Please note that this game only works with mouse controls, so you’ll need to use a compatible setup – it won’t work on a standard Switch.
