Despite limited promotion from Rockstar Games, Red Dead Redemption 2 is quickly becoming one of the best-selling video games ever made.
Around the end of January, video game companies usually begin releasing their financial reports for the quarter or year. These reports are important for both investors and players, as companies sometimes accidentally share exciting details. Fans are especially hoping for news about GTA 6, and are looking to reports like the one coming from Take-Two Interactive on February 3rd for any clues.
Dead Red Dead Redemption 2 has more life than many hits
Some fans of Rockstar Games are starting to lose interest in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI. They’d rather hear news about another series, Red Dead, but Rockstar hasn’t released any updates for it in a long time. It’s surprising, as pointed out by @videotechuk_ on X, that Red Dead Redemption 2 is on track to become one of the best-selling games of all time – despite not even being updated for newer gaming consoles.
It’s worth noting that many current game rankings don’t include Tetris, even though it used to be considered the greatest game of all time. While it was once incredibly popular, that ranking included every version of the game – not just the original, which made the claim a bit of an exaggeration.
Currently, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 80 million copies. This makes it the fourth best-selling game of all time, trailing behind Wii Sports (almost 83 million copies), and significantly behind Grand Theft Auto 5 (220 million copies) and Minecraft (350 million copies).
Recent sales figures for Red Dead Redemption 2 are from November, making it unlikely to surpass Nintendo’s top sports game anytime soon. However, Take-Two Interactive announced in February 2025 that 70 million copies of RDR 2 had been sold. That number quickly increased to over 74 million by May, and reached 79 million by November. This means Red Dead Redemption 2 is consistently selling several million copies each quarter.
I can’t believe how well this game is still doing! It’s over seven years old, and it’s consistently a top performer. It has an online mode, just like GTA Online, but Rockstar doesn’t seem to update it nearly as much. What’s really wild is that Red Dead 2 hasn’t even gotten a proper next-gen release for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S – we’re still playing it on those consoles through backward compatibility!
It’s surprising how little Rockstar Games talks about Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online these days. The team is understandably focused on GTA 6, which comes out November 19th. However, they still regularly update GTA Online, and GTA V even got an update for newer consoles nearly four years ago. Perhaps we’ll hear something about the Red Dead series on February 3rd when Take-Two Interactive shares its latest financial report?
