Olivia Wilde is back in the world of suspenseful, romantic thrillers with her new film, I Want Your Sex, which received positive reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will soon be released. Many viewers will remember Wilde from earlier roles – perhaps as the star rose with films like Tron: Legacy (2010) and Cowboys & Aliens (2011), or from her work in independent films like Drinking Buddies (2013) and Better Living Through Chemistry (2014). She also delivered a strong performance as a journalist in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell (2019).
I first noticed her talent when she was on The O.C. in 2004-2005 – that show was surprisingly good, and many of us immediately recognized her as a captivating performer. More recently, she directed the film Don’t Worry Darling (2022). Now, she’s returning to that type of genre with I Want Your Sex (2026). Magnolia Pictures has acquired the film for around seven figures and plans to release it in theaters this summer on July 31st, according to Deadline.
Unfortunately, the new film I Want Your Sex is competing with Tom Holland and Zendaya’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Superhero movies, while still enjoyable, have become less popular after years of studios focusing heavily on big-budget franchise films. It’s good to have some variety, and the recent Academy Awards highlighted this by honoring original movies like Sinners and One Battle After Another.

Cooper Hoffman appears alongside Olivia Wilde in I Want Your Sex, playing a young inspiration who develops a crush on her character, a rebellious artist. The film also features a diverse cast including Johnny Knoxville from Jackass, Mason Gooding, Margaret Cho, Chase Sui Wonders, Roxane Mesquida, Daveed Diggs, and Charli XCX.
The film is well-received, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a positive review from MovieWeb. While not every critic loved it – which is typical for erotic thrillers that don’t receive the same level of funding or attention as a classic like Basic Instinct – most agree it’s an enjoyable film that playfully explores Gen Z’s anxieties surrounding sex.
As a huge cinema fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Gregg Araki. He really hit his stride in the ’90s with what people call his “Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy” – films like Totally Fed Up, The Doom Generation, and Nowhere. Criterion recently put out a collection of them, and they’re just incredible – a really vibrant look at teen life and sexuality at the time, made with a raw, independent spirit and a killer soundtrack. You could see a lot of future stars in those films, like Rose McGowan, Parker Posey, and Ryan Phillippe. Araki’s continued to work steadily since then, directing White Bird in a Blizzard with Shailene Woodley, and even doing episodes of shows like Riverdale and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

I’ve always been fascinated by erotic thrillers! They really hit their stride in the 80s with directors like Brian De Palma – films like Dressed to Kill and Body Double were amazing. Then Adrian Lyne came along with Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, and even William Friedkin’s Jade added to the mix. It’s a genre that hasn’t always been mainstream, but it’s got a really loyal fanbase. We’ve seen it continue into the 21st century with films like Unfaithful and, more recently, Babygirl. Now, with a director as bold as Araki at the helm, I have a feeling I Want Your Sex is going to deliver something truly exciting for fans of the genre.
