Okay, last night was AMAZING! Olivia Rodrigo killed it on Saturday Night Live! Not only did she show off some seriously funny sketch comedy skills – remember Bizaardvark? – but she also premiered a brand new song from her upcoming album, You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So in Love. Connor Storrie from Heated Rivalry (I think he was in town for the Met Gala) did the intro, and she sang this incredible track called “begged,” which features Weyes Blood. She actually played it for a super small crowd at The Echo in LA before this! And get this – the legendary Debbie Harry introduced her performance of the album’s first single, “Drop Dead”! Seriously, what a night.
The song “begged” explores a common relationship issue: one partner wanting to go out more than the other. The lyrics, including the lines “What a shame, you’re not here / Here to witness my devotion / And my endless well of needs / I’m an anchor in the ocean,” suggest a feeling of being held back. Olivia Rodrigo has mentioned that some of her new songs are inspired by the characters Miranda and Steve from Sex and the City. Given this, “begged” could be told from Steve’s point of view, reflecting his frustrations and desires.
