As a longtime admirer of Olivia Hussey Eisley’s illustrious career and captivating performances, I am deeply saddened by the news of her passing. Her life was a remarkable tapestry woven with passion, artistry, and a dedication to her craft that few can rival.

73-year-old British-Argentine actress Olivia Hussey Eisley, who became famous for her roles in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 version of “Romeo and Juliet” and the horror film “Black Christmas,” as well as the 1978 movie “Death on the Nile,” passed away last Friday.

The San Francisco Chronicle was informed by filmmaker Marc Huestis, and it was subsequently shared on Hussey’s Instagram account, that his death had been confirmed.

With deep regret, we share the news that Olivia Hussey Eisley, known for her radiant spirit, passed away peacefully at home on December 27th, in the company of her cherished ones. Her life was a beacon of warmth, insight, and unparalleled kindness that left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. … Olivia’s journey was a testament to her zest for life, love, commitment to art, spirituality, and compassion for animals.

Following her successful West End performance in “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” opposite Vanessa Redgrave, Hussey caught the attention of Italian director Franco Zeffirelli. This led to her starring role in his film adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet.” In this production, she played opposite Leonard Whiting as the title characters. The movie catapulted both young actors onto a global platform. They were each recognized at the 1969 Golden Globe Awards for their debut performances, with nominations in their respective categories of most promising newcomer. Additionally, Zeffirelli’s film earned four Academy Award nominations, including best picture and director.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of playing pivotal roles in films like “All the Right Noises” and “The Summertime Killer.” However, it was my role as Jessica, a sorority sister in Bob Clark’s 1974 horror classic “Black Christmas,” that truly marked my journey in cinema. This film is now recognized as a precursor to the slasher genre, where I faced an unseen, psychopathic stalker terrorizing our sorority house. I also graced the screen in the 1978 adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Death on the Nile,” alongside Peter Ustinov as Hercule Poirot. Other significant milestones include portraying Norma Bates, mother of Norman Bates, in the intricate “Psycho IV: The Beginning” and Mary in Zeffirelli’s miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth,” a reunion project for both of us.

Hussey is mourned by her spouse, David Glen Eisley, along with their kids, Alex, Max, and India, as well as their grandchild, Greyson.

More to come…
