The supposed April Fools’ joke turned out to be true: infantry units are coming to War Thunder.
I was so hyped when Gaijin Entertainment dropped their “The Next Big Thing” trailer on April 1st! It was meant to give us a sneak peek at their next major update for the war game. While it showed a lot of the tanks, planes, and vehicles we already know and love, I got really excited when I spotted some brand new infantry units – stuff we hadn’t seen in the game before!
Players immediately thought it was an April Fools’ prank. While developers occasionally use April 1st to test out new ideas, this time they only released a trailer. Many joked that the exciting gameplay shown in the trailer actually came from the game Enlisted.
Okay, so everyone thought infantry was totally off the table in War Thunder. For like, eight months, the devs didn’t even mention them! That’s why I almost fell out of my chair when Gaijin announced the Line of Contact update yesterday. It’s actually bringing infantry into the game! As a long-time War Thunder player, I’ve always noticed infantry in the backgrounds, but we’ve never actually played as them. That’s about to change with the ‘Libération de Cherbourg’ update! We’re finally getting a new game mode where we’ll control foot soldiers alongside the tanks and planes, and the best part is we’ll be able to fully customize their equipment and gear. I’m really excited to try it out!
The game’s official blog will soon have a more detailed article, but sign-ups for the closed beta of this new feature are already open. Players are currently playfully commenting on the nod to the film Saving Private Ryan and some inaccuracies with the Russian weapons. Overall, they’re happily surprised to see the developers’ April Fools’ Day joke actually coming to life.
While some people are worried about how the update will affect gameplay, it’s best to wait and see the specifics before judging it.
