As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to see the new teaser for Avengers: Doomsday! It’s interesting that they briefly showed clips from some of the less successful Marvel movies – maybe a way of acknowledging past missteps? Either way, it’s getting me hyped for the big team-up! It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Avengers all together – Endgame feels like ages ago, back in 2019. This movie seems like it’s going to be a massive payoff, wrapping up storylines that have been building for six years across Phases 4, 5, and 6 of the MCU. I can’t wait to see how it all comes together!
Just like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame drew story threads from all corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – regardless of how well those previous projects performed – the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday will do the same. A new trailer shown at Disney’s D23 event highlighted this, featuring a blend of scenes from various past Marvel movies and series.
The presentation highlighted some recent Marvel movies that didn’t perform well in theaters, reinforcing the idea that even unsuccessful films are still important parts of the larger, connected Marvel Cinematic Universe. It didn’t include any new clips from the upcoming Doomsday film; instead, it looked back at past movies, featuring dialogue from across the Marvel franchise, including films originally produced by Fox like the X-Men series.
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, is the fifth installment in the popular Marvel Studios Avengers series. It features a massive team-up of heroes, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts, as they face off against the classic villain Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play the role of Victor von Doom, and he’s joined by stars like Patrick Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, and Anthony Mackie. Doomsday is the first of two planned Avengers films, and it’s scheduled for release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
The 3 MCU Flops Featured in the Doomsday Teaser
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania
One of the first voices heard in the new Avengers: Doomsday teaser is that of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang.
The trailer began with a familiar voice – Paul Rudd as his size-shifting character from the poorly received Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. He’s reading from his character’s fictional autobiography, Look Out for the Little Guy!, and confidently states, “Will I be there when the Avengers need me? Absolutely.”
Quantumania didn’t do well in theaters and has received very negative reviews, making it one of the lowest-rated Marvel movies so far. This was surprising, considering the film was promoted as the beginning of a major storyline leading to a large-scale battle against Kang the Conqueror (played by Jonathan Majors, who is no longer working with Marvel).
Although Marvel has changed its plans for the next Avengers movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will still be important for introducing the storyline that will lead to the Doomsday event. This is because Ant-Man is now one of the few original Avengers members still active.
Captain America: Brave New World
The latest Captain America movie, Captain America: Brave New World, didn’t quite make the impact many hoped for when it was released earlier this year. Although it earned a solid $450 million worldwide, critics weren’t impressed with the Anthony Mackie-led film.
As a big MCU fan, it’s a little painful to admit, but Brave New World currently has one of the lowest scores on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s actually the third worst-reviewed MCU film, only beating out Eternals and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania – it’s sitting at just 46% right now.
Even with everything happening, the new movie will likely be strongly influenced by Avengers: Doomsday. A line from Mackie’s Captain America in the recent trailer – “If we can’t see the good in each other, we’ve already lost the fight.” – hints at this connection.
This scene might be hinting at a future conflict between the Avengers and a new team, potentially the New Avengers or the Thunderbolts. Sam Wilson (played by Anthony Mackie) could clash with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) over who gets to use the Avengers name.
Thunderbolts
The newest movie added to the trailer for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is Thunderbolts directed by Jake Schreier. The short trailer featured a line of dialogue from the May 2025 film, with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), the leader of the Thunderbolts team, declaring, “We stick together from now on.”
Thunderbolts has been a surprisingly successful Marvel movie. It received a lot of positive attention from both fans and critics, earning an impressive 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and being praised as a strong return to quality after a few less-successful films.
Despite the hype, Thunderbolts didn’t perform well at the box office, earning only $382 million worldwide. This made it one of the lowest-grossing films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, officially considered a box office failure.
Despite not being a big hit in theaters, the Thunderbolts team is expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming Doomsday storyline, where they’ll fight alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
