When Will Octopath Traveler 0 be released?
Good news for RPG fans like me! We won’t have to wait much longer for Octopath Traveler 0. They just announced it’s coming out on December 4th, 2025, which is perfect timing for a long gaming session over the holidays. I’m already planning to lose myself in this one!

Octopath Traveler 0 will be released in standard and digital deluxe versions. The standard edition costs $49.99 and will be available as a physical copy for Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles on Amazon, as well as digitally on all platforms.

Octopath Traveler 0 platforms
Octopath Traveler 0 is coming to most modern gaming systems, including Xbox Series, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2, as well as PC.
Octopath Traveler 0 story, setting, and characters
Octopath Traveler 0 shares a world with both the original Octopath Traveler and the mobile game, Champions of the Continent. The story begins in Wishvale, where a peaceful ceremony is interrupted by a devastating attack, leaving your customized character to rebuild the city and hunt down those responsible.
The game’s reveal trailer showcased several characters players will meet. These include Stia, the player character’s friend and an Architect; Phenn, a vigilant Huntsman; and Laurana, a Cleric. Square Enix promises over 30 characters to play as, each with their own special skills. We also learned about Celsus the thief, Alexia the Scholar, Ludo the Merchant, Viator the Warrior, and Macy the Apothecary. The trailer also introduced the antagonists: Herminia, a greedy Witch; Tytos, a fallen Hero; and Auguste, a mysterious Playwright.
Octopath Traveler 0 gameplay
As a big fan of the first Octopath Traveler, I’m really excited about how the sequel lets you explore! It’s not one of those games where you’re forced down a single path – you can pretty much go where you want, though some areas will definitely be tougher than others depending on how your party is built. What I especially loved in the first game was interacting with people, and it looks like they’ve expanded on that. You can still use special abilities with characters to get info or items, but now there’s a new one called ‘Invite’ – you can actually try to get NPCs to move to your town! That sounds awesome and adds a whole new layer to the world.
You’ll find enemies appearing randomly in different locations. Some enemies, especially the tougher elite ones, are marked on the map and will require more effort and planning to defeat.
Octopath Traveler 0 combat
Octopath Traveler 0, like its predecessors, uses turn-based battles where success depends on exploiting enemy weaknesses to break their defenses. Once an enemy’s defenses are down, they become vulnerable to powerful attacks. You can also use a ‘Boost’ during a character’s turn to make their abilities more effective. A key difference in this game is the expanded team size – up to eight characters can participate in battle, compared to four in previous games. While characters in the front row actively fight, those in the back row provide support. You can even switch characters between rows during combat, adding a new layer of strategy. Octopath Traveler 0’s new features
Octopath Traveler II introduces some exciting new features, including the ability to rebuild towns. You’ll start with Wishdale, gathering materials to construct and place buildings. As you progress, you can recruit characters to help with the rebuilding process, like working in the facilities you create. You can also improve these facilities by completing quests. You can find a more in-depth look at this town-building feature in our Octopath Traveler II preview from Gamescom.
The other big feature is character creation and customization, which we detail below.
How character creation works in Octopath Traveler 0
Creating your character in Octopath Traveler II is unique because the game uses 2D pixel art. Unlike many 3D games, you’ll customize things like gender, eye and hair color/style, skin tone, and even victory poses and voice. You’ll also pick a starting skill, job, a favorite food that boosts stats, and initial equipment.
