NVIDIA is partnering with the U.S. government to build a network of powerful supercomputers powered by artificial intelligence. The project will be huge, utilizing more than 100,000 of NVIDIA’s new Blackwell GPUs, with most of those GPUs going into just two of the computers.
NVIDIA builds supercomputers with the US government
NVIDIA announced a partnership with Oracle and the U.S. Department of Energy on Tuesday to create what will be the world’s biggest AI supercomputer. The project involves seven supercomputers, and five are expected to be operational by the first half of 2026.
Equinox will be a powerful system built with 10,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. However, even more resources will be dedicated to building two additional supercomputers, collectively named Solstice, which will utilize a total of 100,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. The company states its goal is to strengthen the United States’ position as a leader in technology related to security, science, and energy.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang commented on the ambitious project:
Artificial intelligence is the defining technology of today, and scientific advancement is where its potential is greatest. We’re partnering with Oracle to create the Department of Energy’s most powerful supercomputer, which will be a major resource for American researchers. This advanced AI infrastructure will help accelerate discoveries in areas like healthcare and materials science.
Unlike previous projects, this one shouldn’t affect people living in small towns. We’ve seen a growing number of companies building data centers lately, but local communities are starting to push back. This time, both Equinox and Solstice data centers will be built at the same location: Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.
