Even though only two seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds remain, there’s still a chance to feature a particular character in their own dedicated episode. Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut on Paramount+ in 2026, and the show’s fifth and final season is currently being filmed.
Fans miss the days when Star Trek shows had 22 to 26 episodes each season. However, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has done a great job of developing its characters, even with only 10 episodes per season. While each episode tells a self-contained story, the characters themselves grow and change throughout the season.
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds delivered an episode dedicated to Lieutenant Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), addressing a frequent request from fans. Many consider it a highlight of the season, which has received mixed reactions.
It feels like we’ve learned a lot about each main character on Captain Christopher Pike’s Enterprise, but one surprisingly important member of the crew hasn’t had their story told yet.
Nurse Christine Chapel Still Hasn’t Gotten Her Own Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode
It’s surprising that Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) hasn’t had an entire episode dedicated to her character in the first three seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. She’s been such a consistent presence on the show that it’s easy to assume she’s already been the central focus of an episode.
Nurse Christine Chapel has quickly become a fan favorite on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and she’s been central to many storylines. From a romantic connection with Spock to medical collaborations with Dr. M’Benga, and now a relationship with Dr. Korby, Chapel has been a prominent figure throughout the series.
While Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has explored the backgrounds of some characters—like how the show revealed details about Nyota Uhura’s past—it hasn’t yet done the same for Nurse Chapel. We know she’s from Vermont, incredibly intelligent, has been in relationships with both men and women, and served in the Klingon War, but her story remains largely untold.
Nurse Chapel is an important character on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and the show should explore her story more fully. Jess Bush, the actress who plays Chapel, deserves an episode focused entirely on her character. Hopefully, the upcoming episodes of seasons four and five will give Chapel the spotlight she deserves.
How Star Trek: The Original Series Treats Nurse Chapel Is A Letdown After Strange New Worlds
Even if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds doesn’t feature a dedicated episode for Nurse Christine Chapel, the shift to Star Trek: The Original Series is still disappointing for her character. Majel Barrett Roddenberry both originated and played the role of Chapel.
While later versions of Nurse Chapel are known for being energetic, brave, and having complex relationships – even fighting Klingons and pursuing a romance – in the original Star Trek series, she’s mainly remembered as the nurse who had a crush on Spock (Leonard Nimoy). She played a supporting role and wasn’t as developed as the Chapel seen in later shows, though she did try to help Captain Batel (Melanie Scrofano) and had connections with Spock and Dr. Korby.
It was always going to be a challenge to portray a young version of a Star Trek character shaped by the limitations of 1960s television. However, the contrast between how Nurse Chapel is shown in Strange New Worlds and the original Star Trek is particularly noticeable.
Nurse Chapel on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is incredibly capable and should, by all rights, be a doctor. However, the established timeline of Star Trek says Dr. Christine Chapel doesn’t achieve that rank until about ten years later, in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
Nurse Christine Chapel’s history hasn’t been fully explored yet, and actress Jess Bush is incredibly talented. Giving her a chance to lead an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in the show’s last two seasons would be a great way to showcase her abilities.
