Now That’s What I Call Network TV Part 2: The Sitcoms

As a longtime enthusiast of medical dramas and someone who has spent more hours than I care to admit in hospital waiting rooms, I must say that “St. Denis Medical” caught my attention immediately. The premise of a small, underfunded hospital in Oregon resonates deeply with the reality of healthcare today, and as someone who has had their fair share of run-ins with the medical system, I can attest to the frustration and stress that characterizes these settings.

Currently, network dramas are experiencing a revival, boosted by the popularity of shows like Matlock and High Potential, as well as the intriguing yet questionable content of Doctor Odyssey. In contrast, most of the new fall network sitcoms are aimed at capitalizing on established success. Only one, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, is a direct continuation of an earlier show. However, Poppa’s House and Happy’s Place (or perhaps Poppa’s Place and Happy’s House) are mainly created as platforms for well-known comedy actors. It should be noted that this model has proven effective; stars like Reba McEntire and the Wayans family can easily generate excitement without much effort, which gives both shows a strong start.

The standout query for this year revolves around “St. Denis Medical.” With ample opportunities for expansion, it’s particularly intriguing due to the proven track records of creators Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer, as well as its gifted cast. However, its mockumentary style seems somewhat generic, and it hasn’t quite mastered the balance of heartfelt relationships and humor within the corporate landscape that characterized Spitzer’s previous work. Nevertheless, the space between its current state and its potential makes “St. Denis” the most captivating new sitcom this fall. It may not be exceptional at present, but it has the promise to reach great heights.
