As a gamer who has survived countless sleepless nights thanks to the terrifying creations of Hollywood, I can confidently say that Count Orlok, portrayed brilliantly by Bill Skarsgård, is an unparalleled horror icon. With his chilling presence and uncanny ability to blend reality with fiction, he’s a villain who could genuinely step out of the shadows and into our nightmares.

Bill Skarsgård once again manages to give us a chilling experience, with his newest villain in Nosferatu proving even more terrifying than Pennywise the Clown.

In the latest horror film by Robert Eggers, Skarsgård portrays Count Orlok, a character similar to Dracula from German folklore. Upon being resurrected by Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), he lurks in the darkness until he can completely take over her being.

Indeed, it’s often the unseen or obscure aspects of life that can be the most frightening, and Skarsgård masterfully amplifies this concept. His character stands taller than seven feet, boasting a menacing growl, but ironically, he remains largely hidden from our view.

Count Orlok is almost “too real” for his own good in Nosferatu

During their conversation with TopMob, Skarsgård and his fellow actor Nicholas Hoult shared that the character of Count Orlok is scarier than Pennywise, as he seems like a genuine, real-world evil entity rather than just a terrifying fictional figure.

According to Skarsgård, he believes Orlok is the correct choice. He finds Pennywise particularly frightening as children appear to be attracted to him, which he attributes to the inherent eeriness of clowns that sets them apart from other characters.

Hoult comments that what’s unsettling about your acting in this role is how genuine and authentic it feels, and it seems rooted in history.” He further explains, “The fear comes not just from the raw emotion and physicality of your performance, but also because it doesn’t feel staged or detached from reality.

As I gaze at this, a chilling thought crosses my mind: ‘This seems strikingly authentic for that era, and it’s possible that it actually is.’ That’s what makes it so unsettling to me.

In the latest film, we observe Orlok at arm’s length as he endeavors to acquire real estate from Thomas Hutter (Hoult), an unsuspecting real estate agent. However, Orlok’s trusted servant is manipulating the situation behind the scenes, using Hutter as a means to reach Ellen. Our antagonist is relentless and will stop at nothing to obtain what he desires.

As a seasoned actor with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that portraying the role of an all-consuming evil was undoubtedly one of the most physically and mentally exhausting experiences I have ever had. The grueling hours on set, the intense emotions required to bring such a complex character to life, and the countless hours spent in makeup and prosthetics took a toll on me like nothing else before. The scenes filled with explosions and gore were undeniably thrilling, but they paled in comparison to the exhaustion that came from embodying such an evil force day in and day out. It was a challenging role that pushed me to my limits, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything – it was an opportunity to grow as an actor and create something truly memorable for audiences everywhere.

As a gamer, let me tell you, I’ve never felt more drained after a gaming session like I did during that performance. It wasn’t just mental exhaustion, it was a full-body affair. We had to shoot up to 30 takes for certain scenes, and boy, was it taxing. I was giving it my all physically, and by the end of each take, my body would ache from all the intense contractions and yells at the top of my lungs.

On Christmas Day in US theaters, you’ll find Nosferatu, while it hits UK screens a month later on January 1st.
