As a movie enthusiast who has traversed the globe in search of cinematic gems, I must say that the Czech Republic is quickly becoming a beacon for filmmakers worldwide. The recent amendments to their audiovisual act are nothing short of revolutionary, offering substantial incentives that make it an attractive destination for productions of all scales.

The country where Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” was filmed, specifically the Czech Republic, featuring stars like Bill Skarsgård, Willem Dafoe, and Lily-Rose Depp, has significantly increased its support for film productions.

The country’s Audiovisual Act has increased the reward for live-action projects from 20% to 25%. Moreover, a new incentive of 35% is being offered for digital production and animation, with the exception of live-action segments. Notably, the maximum claim per project has been boosted threefold to a staggering $19 million.

Another change is that documentary series can now tap into the production incentive.

Starting from January 2025, there will be substantial modifications to the incentives for production. The full law, incorporating all these changes, will become effective in the year 2026.

For a detailed explanation of how the incentives will work see here.

A significant shift involves a fresh financing approach. According to this new law, the annual incentives fund will be calculated as six times the sum of the money raised through streaming fees and matched funding (which is the government’s contribution that mirrors the total collected from fees). This amount is projected to be approximately $92 million annually.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m absolutely ecstatic about this move! It not only strengthens our collaboration with global film industry players but also enables us to preserve and elevate the Czech Republic’s status as a premier film production center within continental Europe.

Helena Bezděk Fraňková, head of the recently renamed Czech Audiovisual Fund (formerly known as the Czech Film Fund), stated: “Just like other significant film production centers in Europe, we experienced the effects of last year’s Hollywood strikes. I am confident that our initiatives will bring mutual benefits for both our global collaborators and local filmmakers.

The Czech Republic plays host to a diverse range of film productions, including big-budget Hollywood movies, independent films, and collaborative European projects. Notable recent productions include “Blade Runner 2099,” a limited series for Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+’s science fiction series “Foundation,” Lionsgate’s “John Wick” spin-off “Ballerina” starring Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves, and Netflix’s Oscar-winning film “All Quiet on the Western Front.” All of these productions were filmed in the Czech Republic.
