A 24-year-old man in Sør-Rogaland, Norway, could face up to three years in prison after being accused of owning a 2015 Japanese video game that officials have classified as illegal content.
Dorei to no Seikatsu, or “Life with a Slave,” is a visual novel where players care for a young girl who has experienced abuse. While the game offers seven different modes, six of them feature sexual content involving underage characters.
The suspect told Norwegian police he was only playing the game’s version without explicit sexual content. Although the court believed him, they still determined the game violated Norwegian law.
Police investigator Fredrik Martin Sørnes stated that the game’s content legally qualifies as abusive material.
“It depicts sexual acts involving individuals under 18 years old,” Sørnes told Aftenbladet.

The investigation started after Norwegian police received information from the U.S. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). This information led them to a man in Rogaland through his IP address. A search of his home revealed the game, along with other illegal content, on his computer, which was then seized.
Police investigator Erik Henna Hagen compared Dorei to a simple, outdated digital pet like a Tamagotchi, pointing out that it can be easily found online.

So, I found out that the rules for games like this are pretty relaxed in most of Asia – it’s totally legal there. But get this – in Norway, it’s actually considered a crime! It’s kinda wild to think something I can play freely in one place is illegal somewhere else, honestly. It’s a head-scratcher for a lot of people, apparently.
So, I was reading about this guy, and apparently he could get up to three years in jail, but it sounds like the case has been dragging on for so long, the people handling it don’t think he’ll actually get the full sentence. Basically, time’s been on his side, which is kinda weird to think about.
This isn’t the first time Norway has taken legal action against someone for possessing this type of content. Back in August, another man received a three-month jail sentence after police discovered illegal videos and a video game with sexually explicit content involving children on his phone.
