The documentary *No Other Land*, which tells the story of Palestinian families in Masafer Yatta, will be available to stream in the U.S. starting October 20th, without the support of a major distributor. It will be released on Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, and YouTube. The filmmakers chose to forgo a distribution deal with Mubi after learning the company received $100 million from Sequoia Capital, a firm that invests heavily in Israeli military technology. According to co-director Basel Adra, the film highlights the realities of Israeli occupation and Palestinian oppression, a perspective they felt wouldn’t align with the content major U.S. streaming services wanted to feature. They had been in talks with MUBI for months, believing they’d found a suitable platform, but ultimately decided against the partnership due to the investment from Sequoia Capital.
The creators of *No Other Land* chose to release the film independently so all profits could directly support Palestinians in Masafer Yatta. Co-director Yuval Abraham explained that it didn’t make sense to allow a company that contributes to the oppression of Palestinians to profit from a film documenting that very oppression.
Mubi has faced criticism following news of its investment from Sequoia Capital. Filmmaker Eddie Huang said his documentary, *Vice Is Broke*, wasn’t properly promoted after he spoke out against Mubi accepting money from Sequoia. At the Venice Film Festival, Jim Jarmusch expressed his disappointment with the deal. The controversy stems from Sequoia Capital’s investment in Kela, an Israeli tech company developing AI for military use. Mubi responded on June 14th, stating that the views of its investors don’t represent the company’s own and reaffirming its commitment to remaining an independent, founder-led business. They also said they are taking community feedback seriously.
