The new game from a co-creator of the Just Cause series is drawing inspiration from Grand Theft Auto 4, aiming for a gritty and violent depiction of a hostile city.

Liquid Swords, a relatively new studio, has primarily been in the news for recent layoffs. Despite this, the team led by Christofer Sundberg is continuing development on their first game and has just released a brief teaser trailer. You can view the video on X (formerly Twitter) below.

The video doesn’t show anyone actually playing the game; it just gives us a look at the game’s setting. Even in this short clip, it’s clear the city isn’t a clean, thriving place where people are well cared for. Beyond the rundown visuals, the accompanying text mentioning things like hope, leaving, and paying rent with violence really emphasizes how bleak and unpleasant the city is.

Gamers immediately recognized similarities to Rockstar’s popular gangster games, particularly Grand Theft Auto 4. But the online reaction hasn’t been entirely positive.

One reason for the reaction is the release of MindsEye. Despite big claims from a former Grand Theft Auto developer, it seems to have turned some players off from realistic, city-based open-world games.
