As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed Andrew Garfield‘s meteoric rise to fame and subsequent ebbs and flows in his career, I find myself both intrigued and somewhat baffled by his recent interview with British GQ.
Garfield, the man who graced our screens in not one, not two, but three high-profile movies last year, has suddenly found himself in a rather quiet spell, with only one film scheduled for release in 2024. The rumors of his involvement in “Spider-Man 4” and Martin Scorsese’s “A Life of Jesus” have been quashed, leaving fans like myself wondering what the future holds for our dear Spidey alum.
It is refreshing to see Garfield taking a more active role in managing his public image and setting the record straight about upcoming projects. However, I can’t help but chuckle at the irony of him claiming he won’t be in “Spider-Man 4” when he lied about being in the previous one. Ah, the life of an actor!
Despite his temporary absence from the big screen, there are still a few tantalizing glimmers of Andrew Garfield content on the horizon: a Luca Guadagnino movie with Julia Roberts and an adaptation of “The Magic Faraway Tree” by Enid Blyton, starring none other than Claire Foy.
In his interview, Garfield expressed his eagerness to continue working but acknowledged that one cannot simply wait for Scorsese to call, given the director’s infrequent output and tendency to cast Leonardo DiCaprio in leading roles. I can’t help but imagine a hilarious scenario where the tables are turned, with Garfield offering DiCaprio a line or two as a supporting player in one of his upcoming projects. After all, life is full of surprises!
Despite appearing in three high-profile films in 2021 (namely, Spider-Man: No Way Home, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and Tick, Tick … Boom!, for which he was nominated for an Oscar), it might seem that Andrew Garfield was a frequent presence on screens. However, this isn’t the case, as he didn’t star in any movies in 2022 or 2023. He only appeared in We Live in Time in 2024, and his future projects are fewer than what was anticipated. In a January 2 profile for British GQ, Garfield addressed the speculation surrounding his participation in two upcoming productions.
Initially, he stated that he won’t be in the movie “Spider-Man 4”, acknowledging that people might doubt his words due to previous untruths. Despite this, we choose to believe him. Moreover, he denies being part of Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film about Jesus, “A Life of Jesus”. Speaking with GQ, Garfield clarified, “There was a rumor… It’s not true to my knowledge.” One might wonder if such news would slip by his notice, Andy.
Despite not having any immediate projects with Andrew Garfield as the main lead, you’ll still find him on your screens soon: He’s set to appear in an upcoming film directed by Luca Guadagnino alongside Julia Roberts and is also part of a movie adaptation of Enid Blyton’s book The Magic Faraway Tree with Claire Foy. In an interview with GQ, he expressed his enthusiasm for work, saying “I enjoy working, not that I’m just sitting around waiting for Scorsese to call because he makes a movie every three years and often Leo DiCaprio is part of it.” Just to clarify, these are supporting roles in the movies. Perhaps next time, Andrew Garfield can return the favor by letting DiCaprio have some cocaine on set!
