As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the future of gaming is brighter than ever. Having witnessed the rise and fall of countless consoles and trends, I am more than excited about the prospect of the upcoming years.
According to market analysis firm DFC Intelligence, their 2024 report indicates a positive outlook for the industry, even after two years marked by unpredictability, widespread job losses, and studio shutdowns. Remarkably, this sector experienced significant expansion due to the pandemic, followed by a decline; however, DFC anticipates that growth will resume in 2025 and continue beyond that year.
By 2028, it’s projected that around half the world population, approximately 4 billion people, will be gamers. Out of this massive group, about 10% are categorized as ‘core gamers’, who are responsible for spending a significant 65% on video games. The remaining majority, often mobile-only gamers, don’t own any specialized gaming hardware.
In the upcoming years, it’s anticipated that Nintendo will emerge as a significant victor. Their forthcoming console, often referred to as the Switch 2, is projected to hit the market in 2025, with minimal competition likely from Sony or Microsoft at that time. According to DFC Intelligence, the Switch 2 could sell between 15 and 17 million units in 2025 alone, and potentially over 80 million by 2028.

The sales of Nintendo’s new console will continue a pattern of increased spending on gaming equipment, as this sector overtook PC and console software sales in 2023. This category encompasses video game consoles, PC components and add-ons, and devices such as the Steam Deck. This trend is fueled by dedicated gamers, particularly PC enthusiasts who value top-tier gaming hardware as a symbol of status. Although certain gaming accessories and equipment can be pricey, DFC emphasizes that they are still less costly compared to other pursuits like luxury cars, art/antique collecting, traveling, skiing, or golf.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but feel the anticipation brewing for the next generation of console wars. According to DFC Intelligence, one giant may fall amidst this battlefield, with either Sony or Microsoft potentially taking the hit, depending on various factors. Timing could be everything, so jumping in early might just tip the scales.
2025 could prove to be another stellar year for the launch of new video games, with industry experts pointing towards the highly anticipated debut of GTA 6 as a significant factor. Moreover, DFC anticipates that both Microsoft and Sony will roll out their next-gen consoles somewhere between 2026 and 2028. This, in turn, fuels the firm’s belief that revenue generated from PC and console gaming will surpass $200 billion annually by the year 2028.
