Nintendo is well-known for strongly protecting its games and ideas through legal action, and a long-running case may finally be ending. Back in 2010, Nintendo sued BigBen Interactive (now Nacon) in Germany over unofficial Wii Remote controllers. The most recent court decision has clearly sided with Nintendo.
According to Games Fray, a German court has once again ruled that Nacon owes Nintendo over €4 million, plus interest. Because Nacon contested the original decision, the amount due has now grown to almost €7 million.
Nintendo argued that Nacon’s Wii Remote copied key parts of its technology, specifically the motion-tracking sensors, camera, and accelerometer, as well as its distinctive design. While the original ruling was made in 2011, Nacon has repeatedly appealed the decision without success.
It looks like this isn’t over yet! Despite recent developments, Games Fray reports that Nacon has filed another appeal.
Nintendo has been winning legal battles against people who illegally copy or use its games. Recently, in October, a streamer named Jesse Keighin, known as “EveryGameGuru,” was ordered to pay Nintendo $17,500 after he streamed pirated games and shared links to the Yuzu and Ryujinx emulators. Keighin had previously made fun of Nintendo’s attempts to take legal action against him.
While Keighin’s payment to Nintendo is significant, it’s much smaller than the potential $4.5 million James “Archbox” Williams could owe. Nintendo claims Williams ran a Reddit page and several websites dedicated to Switch piracy, sold tools for hacking the console, and offered modified Switches pre-loaded with illegal games.
