Following the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo is already planning more films. A sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is in development, along with a live-action movie based on Zelda. Nintendo has hinted at even more movie projects and shared its overall approach to making films in the future.
Nintendo announced during its recent financial update that it’s planning a steady stream of movies based on its popular games. They’ve already scheduled a Super Mario Galaxy movie for 2026 and a live-action Zelda movie for 2027, with more films in development for the future.
Nintendo announced they’re still planning to make more movies based on their games. While they didn’t mention any specific titles, rumors have suggested a Donkey Kong movie might be in development. Nintendo owns many well-loved characters and series, and it remains to be seen which ones will be turned into films.
Whether Nintendo will create TV series based on its popular games is still unknown. There were talks a while back about a Zelda show on Netflix, but that didn’t happen. However, a Zelda movie produced by Sony Pictures is expected to start filming in New Zealand this week, or may have already begun. Bo Bragason will play Zelda, and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth will play Link in the film.
The first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie will reportedly be shown before screenings of the new film, Wicked: For Good, which comes out later this month.

Nintendo doesn’t just let other companies make movies based on its games. They actively participate in funding and the entire filmmaking process. For instance, Shigeru Miyamoto was a producer on The Super Mario Bros. Movie and will also produce the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy and Zelda movies.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success, earning $1.36 billion worldwide. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, just after Barbie ($1.44 billion), and currently ranks as the 18th highest-grossing movie of all time.
Nintendo reported that the movie was a hit with everyone – longtime Mario fans, people new to gaming, and audiences of all ages, from kids to older adults. They were especially happy with the positive feedback they received, saying the warm comments meant even more to them than the movie’s box office success.
Nintendo is currently experiencing a surge in its gaming business, largely driven by the successful launch of the Switch 2. The console has already sold over 10 million units, making it Nintendo’s quickest-selling system to date. Nintendo is optimistic about holiday sales and has increased its forecast for the year, now expecting to sell between 15 and 19 million units by March 2026.
