It seems some users of the Nintendo Switch have found that certain newly bought Switch video games lack the game cartridge within their packaging. What’s even stranger is that the cartridges seem to be replaced with… googly eyes!

During the holiday season, mysterious posts about an unusual occurrence started appearing on social platforms. Numerous gamers have posted pictures of newly opened Nintendo Switch game boxes, revealing a single googly eye instead of the expected game piece in its place.

A Reddit post, complete with a picture, reads, “It looks like the Grinch has claimed our Super Mario Party Jamboree this year, as evidenced by the single googly eye found in the slot for the game cartridge.

It’s uncertain how common this problem is or who might be responsible. Some players speculate that workers in warehouses, possibly at various points within the supply chain, could be stealing the cartridges (perhaps with the goal of reselling them) and swapping them out for a plastic eye to avoid detection, or to ensure the box continues to make the sound of a game still inside when shaken.

Despite the unknown origin of the vanished game cartridges, numerous remarks and posts hint at buying a Nintendo Switch game from Walmart only to discover a googly eye instead. This might point towards Walmart’s warehouses as the potential culprit behind the issue.

One Reddit user says they’ve fallen victim to the googly eye switcheroo multiple times.

Purchased Tears of the Kingdom from a Walmart in Arizona, but they refused to give me a refund or replacement, blaming Nintendo. After some persuasion, Nintendo finally provided me with a digital version of the game. Recently, I went back to Walmart to buy Pokémon Violet. I asked the cashier to watch me open it because of my previous experience with Tears of the Kingdom. The cashier was shocked when I opened the new game to find another sticker on it. They exchanged the game for a new one (which we double-checked).

At present, neither Walmart nor Nintendo has offered any insights regarding the matter. However, a potential cause might be problems in Walmart’s warehouses or distribution centers. Yet, it’s also plausible that old Saint Nick may have run out of coal this holiday season.
