Following numerous leaks and whispers, Nintendo officially unveiled the Switch 2 today in an unexpected social media video. This hybrid console boasts a larger size, magnetic Joy-Cons, and it appears a new Mario Kart is in development. Yet, this unveiling feels overly corporate, bland, and devoid of the usual excitement that heralds the arrival of a fresh gaming system.
In the initial unveiling of Switch 2, humans were noticeably absent. Instead, the video predominantly showcases an off-white backdrop and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to highlight the differences between Switch 2 and its predecessor. It appears that Nintendo is keen to avoid a repeat of the Wii U scenario, making it clear that Switch 2 is not just an add-on but will indeed replace the original system. However, the teaser trailer seems more focused on showcasing basic upgrades rather than emphasizing that Switch 2 represents the next leap in Nintendo gaming, similar to the New Nintendo 3DS XL’s initial reveal.

It’s clear that Nintendo is in a stronger position financially and culturally compared to late 2016 when the first Nintendo Switch was unveiled. The initial reveal trailer seemed more vibrant, due to real people being involved, and brimming with creativity, compared to today’s presentation.
The original Switch introduction showcased a man playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on his television, swiftly transitioning to the Nintendo Switch logo. It then demonstrated how portable the system was by showing him taking it outdoors to play at a park with his dog in the morning.
Although unverified, it might have added impact if they had shown Metroid Prime 4: Beyond running or having improved graphics on the potential Switch 2 during the presentation. This could have given us a sense of amazement or at least an idea of the system’s technical capabilities.
In this trailer, Nintendo demonstrates various scenarios where the Switch can be utilized, ranging from an airplane to a lively rooftop gathering. This video also includes real people using the device, unlike the initial reveal of the Switch 2. Alongside its own games, Nintendo previews several third-party titles that will be available for the original Switch, giving us a glimpse into what we can expect from the system. Notably, it was during this presentation when we first learned that Skyrim would be coming to the console. To provide some context, third-party support had significantly dropped on Wii U, so it was important for Nintendo to show that partners were supportive of the Switch. It would have been beneficial if Nintendo allowed third parties to tease their games with the Switch 2 instead of just showing vague Mario Kart footage. Displaying that Fortnite will indeed function on the Switch 2 seems like an obvious choice and a definite advantage.

In the final portion of the initial reveal for Switch, Nintendo truly showcased its strength compared to what we might expect from Switch 2. The original unveiling not only displayed gameplay footage that eventually became Super Mario Odyssey, but also hinted at Splatoon 2 (although some viewers weren’t sure if it was a full sequel initially). Regarding Switch 2, Nintendo seems to be offering a rather predictable preview of a new Mario Kart, presumably Mario Kart 9. Given that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is one of Nintendo’s highest-selling games ever, a new entry on Switch 2 could be highly successful. However, the presentation for this upcoming Mario Kart could have been made more exciting or at least highlighted how this new version will stand out. Some keen-eyed fans have speculated that 24 racers can race simultaneously in this new Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong appears to have a redesign closer to his look in the New Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The part that’s most captivating about the introduction of Switch 2 involves the apparent inclusion of optical sensors in each revised Joy-Con. A brief section in the presentation suggests that the controllers are gliding over a surface, which might imply that the upcoming Switch 2 will incorporate mouse-like controls. Instead of explicitly announcing new functionality behind the Joy-Cons for Switch 2, Nintendo only emphasized their magnetic aspect.
In my opinion, demonstrating mouse-like controls on the forthcoming Switch 2 by showcasing a new game like a revamped Mario Paint, Mario Maker, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, or even an existing title such as Minecraft during the reveal would have increased the level of excitement and wonder for this announcement.
It seems like Nintendo might be playing it safe with the upcoming Switch 2, focusing more on maintaining what’s already popular rather than pushing boundaries. This could give the impression that they are no longer actively trying to grow the video game user base. However, initial impressions can be misleading, and it’s worth noting that if the current system is well-loved, perhaps a conservative approach is all that’s necessary.
Historically, Nintendo tends to face difficulties when it becomes too cautious and content with its current state. The upcoming Switch 2 appears rather conventional in this regard. However, with the announcement of a Switch 2 Direct scheduled for April 2, there is ample opportunity to generate excitement and anticipation.
