Nintendo Switch 2 surpasses 10 million units sold, despite fan anger about prices

Nintendo recently announced that the Switch 2 continues to sell incredibly well. Just a month after its release, the console reached 5 million units sold – the fastest sales rate ever for a gaming console. Now, as of the end of September, Nintendo reports sales have surpassed 10 million units. This is more than double the sales of the original Switch during its first two quarters.

Nintendo Switch 2 sales hit 10 million, continuing its impressive run

After the Switch 2 was announced, many people expressed dissatisfaction with Nintendo. This largely stemmed from the price of Mario Kart World, the first video game to cost $80, combined with the $450 price of the console itself. Viewers frequently demanded lower prices during the subsequent Treehouse livestream. Concerns were also raised about upgrades for Nintendo Switch 2 games costing $10, even for older titles like Breath of the Wild, which still sells for its original $60 price. Despite this criticism, console and game sales remain strong.

Nintendo’s decision to keep the price of Mario Kart World steady appears to have paid off, with the game nearly reaching 10 million units sold. Specifically, Mario Kart World has sold 9.57 million copies, compared to 10.36 million for the Switch 2. This suggests that around 90% of Switch 2 owners also purchased Mario Kart World, as the game is exclusive to Nintendo devices.

Nintendo announced that Donkey Kong: Bananza, another game exclusive to the Switch 2, has sold 3.49 million copies. This news comes before the release of Kirby Air Riders later this month and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment this week. With major releases like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond available on both the original Switch and the new Switch 2, it will be a key point to watch how sales are divided between the two systems.
