Nintendo President plots more movies after Mario and Zelda, won’t rule out anime

Nintendo is already looking beyond Mario and Zelda when it comes to movies.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to creating films and animated content. Nintendo plans to continue producing movies beyond its current projects and remains open to exploring anime as well.

In a recent interview with Kyoto Shimbun, Nintendo president Furukawa talked about the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie, releasing in April, and the live-action Legend of Zelda film planned for 2027. He explained that Nintendo will be heavily involved in making these films, much like they are with their games – starting with the initial ideas and maintaining strong creative oversight throughout the entire process.

By consistently delivering quality, we build customer trust. This doesn’t just make people aware of our characters—it turns them into loyal fans, according to translations.

These statements follow the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned over $1 billion worldwide. However, Nintendo’s president, Furukawa, emphasized that the company isn’t focused on short-term gains.

Look, making money now is cool and all, but what I really want is to get these characters everywhere. Movies are huge for that – they let us reach fans even in places where gaming isn’t as big yet. It’s about building a bigger fanbase, not just selling more games right now.

Nintendo looking to bring more franchises to the big screen

Nintendo is aiming to create a sustainable system for producing animated films, extending far beyond just the Mario and Zelda franchises.

This makes it possible to bring other popular franchises to life, like Star Fox, F-Zero, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong, and many others that fans have requested.

Okay, so it looks like people in the movie world are already starting to notice how cool a Metroid movie could be! Chris Stuckmann, who’s a YouTuber and recently directed a film called Shelby Oaks, actually said he’d love to direct a Metroid movie. That’s awesome, right? I’d definitely watch that!

Jeff Fowler, who directed Sonic the Hedgehog 2, has talked about wanting to make a movie similar to Super Smash Bros., bringing together characters from different franchises. Ben Schwartz, the voice of Sonic, has also suggested that a Super Smash Bros.-style movie is becoming more likely.

Furukawa mentioned that fans are interested in anime made by Nintendo, but creating it won’t be a simple process.

It’ll be difficult to achieve that goal, but if we focus on making things that are distinctly Nintendo, it could be really beneficial down the line.
