Previously this year, Nintendo unveiled a short sneak peek at what seems to be the Switch 2. The initial reveal didn’t provide much information about the upcoming console, but there was an intriguing moment in the promotional video where it appeared that the next generation of Joy-Cons might function as a mouse when moving over a flat surface. Now, a Japanese patent application submitted in August 2023 seems to suggest that these Joy-Cons will indeed possess mouse capabilities.
The new Joy-Con design was unveiled to the public on February 6th. This early blueprint refers to the Joy-Con as an “input device.” Moreover, the patent suggests that it will incorporate a sensor for mouse operation, functioning much like traditional computer mice do.
Including mouse functionalities for Switch 2 gaming could offer exciting gameplay opportunities for shooter enthusiasts. Could it be that players might opt for the mouse over traditional controllers? Given its compatibility with PC games designed for mouse play, this setup could prove to be quite effective. Moreover, there’s speculation that Nintendo may be developing unique titles that can leverage these mouse functions in innovative ways we haven’t even considered yet.
It’s a given that we’ll learn more about the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 during their presentation on April 2nd. So far, all we’ve got is a sneak peek of a potential new Mario Kart game, but there are whispers of numerous other games potentially making their way to the Switch 2. EA has hinted that the Madden NFL and EA Sports FC franchises might be among them. As for compatibility with previous generations, it’s confirmed that the Switch 2 will play Switch games, though the exact number of titles playable on both systems remains uncertain. In any case, eager fans will have a chance to try out the new system at various Switch 2 experience events globally.
