Many potential Nintendo Switch 2 owners have expressed strong dislike for “Game-Key Cards” – digital game downloads instead of physical cartridges. However, at least one game publisher has listened to this feedback and is now planning to release games on cartridges again, made possible by Nintendo’s new cartridge size options. This is good news for players who prefer having physical game copies.
Okay, so great news for physical game collectors! Inin Games just announced that R-Type Dimensions III is actually going to get a physical cartridge release in the US and Europe, which is awesome! They were originally planning on using Game-Key Cards, but they re-evaluated the costs. Turns out, Game-Key Cards are cheaper to make, but Nintendo apparently made some changes that brought the price of cartridges down, making a physical release viable. I’m way happier with a cartridge, honestly!
So, I’ve been hearing about these Game-Key Cards that are showing up inside the physical boxes of new Switch 2 games. It’s kinda weird, though – they don’t have the game on the card itself! Instead, the card just lets your console download the game online. It’s like a key to unlock the digital version, which is pretty different than how games used to work.
Nintendo hasn’t officially commented, but reports suggest they’re now offering smaller game cartridges in 16GB and 32GB sizes. These are more affordable than the current standard 64GB cartridge. Previously, game developers had to use the 64GB cartridges for physical releases, even if their games didn’t require that much space. Larger games also needed extra Game-Key Cards because they couldn’t fit on a single cartridge. There are no signs Nintendo plans to create cartridges larger than 64GB, which means developers might continue to rely on Game-Key Cards for bigger titles.
The only downside to the upcoming physical release of R-Type Dimensions III is a slight price increase. However, Inin Games has promised to maintain the original price for those who preordered the game before this change.
Inin Games expresses heartfelt gratitude to the community for their enthusiastic support, valuable feedback, and understanding over the last few days. They state that the passion for physical games, especially R-Type, made this cartridge release a reality, and they are thrilled to be able to deliver it.
So, last month I found out something pretty interesting – Nintendo’s new Pokémon game, Pokopia, is going to be released only as a physical Key Card. That means no cartridge, no download – just a physical card to play the game. It’s the first time Nintendo’s doing something like this, releasing a game exclusively as a Key Card, which is kinda wild!
