Nintendo Just Put Out A Weird Animated Short Film With No Explanation

Nintendo often makes surprising announcements on its Nintendo Today app, but their latest one is particularly puzzling.

The gaming company released a short video called “Close to You” on their app and then quickly posted it to YouTube. They’ve disabled comments on the YouTube video and the description just states the title.

The nearly four-minute animated video isn’t connected to any game announcement. It’s simply a charming little story about a baby trying to get their pacifier back.

Okay, so I was watching this adorable little video, and this baby’s pacifier just floats around all over the place – it’s like something’s pulling it! Then, the baby tries to stand up and walk for the first time, chasing after it. It’s super cute! Oh, and it starts and ends with the Nintendo logo, just in case you didn’t realize Nintendo made it.

The recent video has sparked a lot of questions. Is Nintendo planning to create its own animated movies? Could it be a hidden announcement for a new game? Or is it connected to another project with Illumination? Regardless, many viewers were more concerned about the cleanliness of the baby’s pacifier after seeing it roll around on the floor – it definitely needed a wash before being put back in the baby’s mouth!

Okay, so I was watching this video and around the 29-second mark, the piano music sounded *really* familiar – it reminded me of something straight out of a Pikmin game! And it gets weirder: a lot of people think the baby in the video looks a lot like Rosalina from Super Mario. Some are even saying this whole thing might be connected to the *Super Mario Galaxy* movie Illumination made. Honestly, I have no idea if there’s actually a connection to either of those franchises, or if it’s just a crazy coincidence. But Nintendo is always a bit odd, and this video is just… next level!

It’s unknown who created the animation for this particular video, but Nintendo has its own animation studio called Nintendo Pictures. Before Nintendo bought and rebranded it as Nintendo Pictures in 2022 (it was previously known as Dynamo Pictures), the studio made several animated shorts featuring Pikmin. Interestingly, Nintendo Pictures’ most recent publicly listed project is work on the game Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

Nintendo is still actively developing video games! They recently announced a new Splatoon game, Splatoon Raiders, through the Nintendo Today app, and fans have several exciting titles to look forward to on the Nintendo Switch 2 this year, including Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.
