Nintendo Japanese eShop Will No Longer Accept Payments With Overseas Credit Cards, PayPal To Prevent “Fraudulent Use”

Nintendo offers various ways for users to pay for their favorite goods, allowing them flexibility in choosing how to make purchases, such as through My Nintendo Gold Points or credit card options. However, significant adjustments are coming to the payment system when Japanese users buy games, add-ons, and related content from the Nintendo eShop.

The company announced on its social media platform that some changes will take place at their Japanese storefront starting in March 2025. They have outlined the details of these changes, which Japanese players should be aware of and update their payment options accordingly before they become permanent.

Starting on March 25th, 2025, Nintendo is implementing a new policy for the Japanese Nintendo eShop to combat fraudulent transactions during purchases. As stated in their official communication, this change includes refusing credit cards issued outside of Japan and PayPal accounts that were opened overseas, effective from Tuesday, March 25, 2025.

As a gamer, I’m letting you know that if I’ve used credit cards issued overseas or PayPal accounts opened outside of Japan in the past, it’s time to switch to domestic payment methods like Japanese-issued credit cards. This change is designed to ensure that only Japanese customers can access content available exclusively or at lower prices in other regions via the Japanese eShop.

As a fan, I’m informed that when making purchases, I’ll need to use a credit card issued in Japan or other alternatives such as purchasing Nintendo eShop gift cards. These options can be used towards my transactions. Nintendo has expressed their apologies to Japanese players for any inconvenience these changes may cause and are grateful for our understanding as this policy goes into effect in Japan starting March 2025.
