Nintendo Is “Making Preparations” To Discourage Potential Switch 2 Scalpers

This year, Nintendo‘s upcoming Switch 2 will have anti-scalping measures in place to ensure a smooth release of their hybrid console. During a recent press conference, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa announced that they would employ every reasonable method to manufacture sufficient quantities of the Switch 2 to cater to demand.

According to Furukawa, speaking to Nikkei (through VGC), we’re ready to implement every feasible action drawing from our past experiences. We’re currently getting everything ready for the task ahead.

Initially when the Nintendo Switch was introduced in 2017, it sold quickly due to its popularity. However, the real surge in demand occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing the supply to fall short of the rising demand. To add fuel to the fire, there was also a global semiconductor shortage at that time. As a result, the Nintendo Switch became highly sought-after in early 2020, and resellers capitalized on this opportunity by purchasing available units and reselling them for profit.

During the release of the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 towards the end of 2020, scalpers posed significant challenges for both Microsoft and Sony. The reason being that due to resellers employing bots to snap up all consoles as soon as additional stock was made available through online platforms, there were persistent shortages.

Previously, it was stated by Furukawa that Nintendo’s approach towards tackling scalpers involves ensuring an adequate supply of Switch 2 consoles for its release this year. In his own words from 2024, he said, “To combat reselling, we feel the key is to manufacture a sufficient quantity to match consumer demand, and this concept remains consistent since last year.

Further information about the Switch 2 will be disclosed in an upcoming Nintendo Direct in April. If you’re eager to try out the device yourself, there’s a chance to do so at the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Demo Event. Unsurprisingly, tickets for this event have appeared on auction websites, but it’s advisable not to purchase them since they cannot be transferred.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited to share some recent updates from Nintendo. Despite a challenging sales year for them, they’re holding steady, which is great news for us gamers! In the coming years, we can look forward to some major releases such as Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon Legends Z-A, both set to drop in 2025. Can’t wait!
