Nintendo has spoken out about the prototype Switch 2 consoles and Joy-Con controllers that were exhibited at a recent industry event, stating that these designs are not authentic representations of their official designs.

Although Nintendo hasn’t officially unveiled the successor of the Switch yet, there have been numerous leaks circulating online, including images indicating the device is being manufactured. This reached its peak at the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show, where a prototype of what appears to be the Switch 2 was showcased by accessory maker Genki.

At CES, the design of the Switch 2 model presented was consistent with those leaked online. However, after reaching out to Nintendo for confirmation about this system, CNET Japan received a response that supports the authenticity of the leaked designs.

Nintendo denies Switch 2 mockup is real

According to CNET Japan’s report, the gaming hardware that Genki claims is Nintendo hardware, as showcased at CES, has not been officially confirmed or endorsed by Nintendo.

It’s possible that Nintendo is being cautious and only confirming the authenticity of the new console once an official announcement has been made. Since the Genki unit resembles designs from other leaks, and no major figures within the gaming community have declared it to be incorrect or misleading, this could indeed be the case.

There’s a chance that the product displayed at CES could be entirely incorrect, based on misleading information. That would be quite an extreme measure, considering the potential need to adjust or replace all the accompanying products if it turns out to be inaccurate.

Nintendo’s language in their response suggests they are being cautious, and they have a convenient loophole if the design proves authentic. Remember, Genki initially stated that the displayed items were not functional hardware but merely replicas created for exhibition.

The current state of things is quite puzzling, and we’re eagerly waiting for Nintendo to unveil the Switch 2 to the public, putting an end to all the rumors and speculation. Previously, they indicated that their next console would be presented during this financial quarter (which ends in March). However, it might be prudent for them to bring forward that date to avoid any leaks that could potentially ruin the surprise.
