Nintendo is gradually bringing characters from its Super Smash Bros. series into the world of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Initially believed to be a simple sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now appears to be part of a larger plan. With each new character added from across the Nintendo universe, it seems likely that the movie is building towards a *Super Smash Bros.style team-up on the big screen.
Nintendo teamed up with Illumination to create a movie based on its popular Mario games, and it was a huge success, earning over $1 billion worldwide after its release in 2023. Now, with the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo plans to expand this cinematic universe and bring even more of its beloved characters – not just from the Mario franchise – to the big screen.
For years, Super Smash Bros. has let players pit Nintendo characters – and those from other game franchises – against each other in exciting battles. Now, it seems Nintendo is bringing that same crossover spirit to its movies.
Super Smash Bros. Characters Confirmed in the Mario Movie Universe
Mario

Mario, a video game icon, recently starred in his own animated movie, with Chris Pratt providing his voice. He’s been a key fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series ever since the first game launched in 1999.
Luigi

Alongside Mario, Luigi is a key part of the Super Mario universe. In the Super Mario movies, Luigi is voiced by Charlie Day and will join his brother on a grand adventure. He’s also been a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series since the very first game, though players originally had to unlock him.
Princess Peach

Anya Taylor-Joy is the voice of Princess Peach in the new Super Mario movie. The film, called Super Mario Galaxy Movie, will explore Peach’s backstory and give her the famous parasol she’s known for.
Peach is well-known for her strong aerial attacks in the Super Smash Bros. series, and this new ability in the latest game will likely make her even more formidable in future fighting games.
Yoshi

Yoshi, Mario and Luigi’s dinosaur friend, is appearing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. He’s also a regular character in the Super Smash Bros. series. In both the movie and the games, Yoshi, voiced by Donald Glover, has the ability to eat enemies and turn them into eggs. These eggs are a key part of his fighting style in Smash Bros.
Rosalina

Brie Larson joins the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as Rosalina. In the games, Rosalina looks after the Lumas, small star-like creatures, and uses a magical wand. She and a Luma companion also appear as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Bowser

Bowser is the main villain in the Mario games, and Jack Black brilliantly voices him in the Super Mario Bros. movies, bringing both anger and surprisingly good singing. He first appeared as a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. Melee game in 2001, quickly becoming a powerful and challenging opponent.
Bowser’s impressive size, fire-breathing ability, and spiky shell became key strengths in his fighting style, making him a formidable opponent. His ultimate attack, Giga Bowser, would be an amazing addition to any movie battle scene.
Bowser Jr.

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Bowser’s son, Bowser Jr., will be helping his father, and is voiced by Benny Safdie. Bowser Jr. first appeared in the Super Mario Sunshine game, and didn’t become playable until Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Bowser Jr. isn’t the only Koopaling appearing in Nintendo content. Hints of Ludwig von Koopa and Roy Koopa were found in both the Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Super Mario Galaxy content. These appearances are reflected in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, where skins for Ludwig and Roy are available for Bowser Jr.
Donkey Kong

I was really excited to see Donkey Kong in the first Super Smash Bros. Movie – Seth Rogen totally nailed the voice! But I’ve heard he might not be in the sequel, which… honestly, makes a little sense. Kong’s a huge star with his own games, and he’s been a part of the Super Smash Bros. universe as a fighter since the very beginning, so they might be focusing on other characters this time around.
Diddy Kong

Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong’s younger nephew, made his film debut in the first Super Mario movie, with Eric Bauza providing his voice. He’s not known for raw power like his uncle; instead, Diddy Kong uses various gadgets to help him compete in Super Smash Bros. games, where he’s been a playable character since Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 2008.
Fox

I’m so hyped! It’s official – Fox McCloud from Star Fox is joining the Nintendo Movie universe! There were rumors for ages that Star Fox would somehow cross over with the Super Mario Galaxy movie, and Nintendo finally confirmed it with a cool poster of Fox just a week before the film comes out. It’s a dream come true!
Fox has been a playable character in every Super Smash Bros. game since the series began in 1999. His appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie strongly suggests Nintendo is considering making a Super Smash Bros. movie as well.
Pikmin (+ Olimar)

Everyone was surprised to see the Pikmin featured in ads for the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which strongly suggests that Nintendo’s films are all connected. The Pikmin, along with their human companion Olimar, were first introduced to a wider audience when they became playable characters in the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game.
ROB

ROB the robot was one of the first characters outside of the main Mario cast to be seen in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Originally created as an accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System, ROB later became a popular character in the last three Smash Bros. games, known for his ability to attack opponents from a distance with ranged projectiles.
Little Mac

Although some characters haven’t had major roles in the Super Mario Bros. movies yet, hints and Easter eggs suggest they might appear in the future. For example, a picture of Little Mac, the main character from the Punch-Out!! games, was visible in a pizza shop in the first movie, hinting at his possible introduction.
Pit

The movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie includes a nice nod to the game Kid Icarus. You can see Mario playing it on his Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The main character of Kid Icarus, Pit, is an angel who also appears as a playable fighter in the Smash Bros. series, starting with the 2008 game Brawl.
Game & Watch

The first Super Mario Bros. movie includes some neat nods to the classic Game & Watch handhelds, especially in scenes set in Brooklyn. During the construction sequences, a fire truck visually resembles the design from the Game & Watch game Fire, and Mario and Luigi’s chase through the site is reminiscent of the gameplay in Mario’s Cement Factory.
Mr. Game & Watch has been a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series since Melee, and continues to appear in the latest game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Duck Hunt Dog

The dog from the classic game Duck Hunt makes a quick appearance in the first Super Mario Bros. movie as a painting of a laughing bulldog, which resembles its iconic expression. Both the duck and dog characters later became playable fighters in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Captain Falcon

A poster visible in Mario’s room in the first movie includes the Blue Falcon, a vehicle from the F-Zero games. This is a nod to Captain Falcon, a character from Smash Bros. who has been officially included in the Mario movie’s world.
