This week, Nintendo rolled out Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, a revamped version of the Wii and 3DS game developed by Retro Studios. Yet, it appears that the original team members at Retro aren’t individually recognized in this updated edition. Instead, the credits acknowledge that it’s “based on the work” of Retro Studios, with Forever Entertainment getting credit for their efforts on the remaster. Recently, Nintendo has spoken up about this situation. As a dedicated fan, I find myself pondering over the significance of the team behind such an iconic game not receiving individual recognition.
A Nintendo representative told Eurogamer that it’s important to acknowledge everyone who plays a role in designing or enhancing a video game, as they highly appreciate the efforts of every team member throughout the development phase.
It’s not clear why the original team wasn’t given credit in this instance, and it appears that such oversights have occurred previously. For example, the developers from Retro Studios were overlooked during the credits of Metroid Prime Remastered in 2023, just as external translators expressed disappointment last year for not being credited by Nintendo for their contributions.
The story about a potential new game in the Donkey Kong Country franchise has been overshadowed by the announcement of the Switch 2 this week. Even though there’s speculation that the Switch 2 might feature the franchise, it’s not among the games being rumored for the new system. In the interim, you can still enjoy the quirky Donkey Kong Country animated TV series on Prime Video.
