Games like Elden Ring and Dark Souls from FromSoftware usually have one set difficulty level, but the Ninja Gaiden series does things differently.
Okay, so in Ninja Gaiden 4, there are four different difficulty settings. The developers, Team Ninja, really wanted to make sure both long-time fans and people totally new to the series could enjoy the game. They wanted it to feel like a classic Ninja Gaiden, but also be welcoming to anyone picking it up for the first time.
Earlier this year, producer Masakuza Hirayama explained that the game includes a way for players to learn the combat system without facing overly difficult challenges.
The game has a Hero Mode for players who want a bit of help. When you turn on Hero Mode, several assists are activated automatically, like Auto Guard and Auto Dodge. These assists also make more complex moves easier to perform. Importantly, you don’t have to use all of the assists. You can customize them individually in the settings menu at any time, turning them on or off as you prefer.
As you become a more skilled Ninja Gaiden 4 player, you can adjust the game’s difficulty to match your level. But what difficulty options are available, and how do you unlock them?
Every Difficulty Setting In Ninja Gaiden 4
Ninja Gaiden 4 has four difficulty levels, each designed to provide a different experience for players of any skill level. Let’s take a closer look.
Mode | Description |
---|---|
Hero | Designed specifically for those new to the Ninja Gaiden series. Auto Dodge/Auto Block is enabled, which means you’ll automatically be able to avoid enemy attacks, particularly at low health. Auto Assist also allows you to pull off complicated combos at ease. It makes for a more cinematic experience that lets you perform stylish combos with ease. |
Normal | The “default” Ninja Gaiden 4 experience that provides the intended taste of the franchise’s trademark difficult, fast-paced combat. It’s nowhere near as easy or simple as “Hero” mode, but it’s not overly challenging, either. If it’s been a while since you’ve played a game like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry, I’d recommend starting here. Tyran will also provide you with free beneficial items after you die. |
Hard | Hard mode is the perfect home for those familiar with Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry/Soulslikes that are looking for a bigger challenge but not quite ready for the expert level that is Master Ninja. Enemies will attack fast and furious, and bosses will take out large chunks of your health. You don’t have to play flawlessly, but you need to be on your A-game. Time to get good. Tyran will also provide you with free beneficial items after you die. |
Master Ninja | If, for some reason, you think the game is still too easy, then here you go. Enemies are brutal, unrelentless, and if you stumble, they can one-shot you. Prepare to die. A lot. Tyran will also no longer provide free items after you die; you’re on your own, kid. You’ll also be unable to change the difficulty mid-stage in Master Ninja mode. |
How To Unlock Master Ninja In Ninja Gaiden 4

Don’t expect to unlock the hardest difficulty in Ninja Gaiden 4 right away. You’ll need to earn it by demonstrating your skills!
It’s actually quite easy! To unlock Master Ninja mode in Ninja Gaiden 4, just finish the main story. After that, you can choose Master Ninja difficulty when you start a new game or tackle the trials.
You cannot change the difficulty during a chapter in Master Ninja.
