Nikki Glaser returned as host of the Golden Globes with her signature witty humor. She kicked things off to Taylor Swift’s “Style” and quickly exceeded the energy of her successful hosting gig last year. She immediately pointed out the incredible star power in the room, playfully highlighting how much less famous she is than the attendees. This is a tactic she used before, positioning herself as a relatable figure among Hollywood’s biggest names like Julia Roberts and George Clooney. She joked about the abundance of “A-listers,” clarifying that she means people on a list that’s been heavily censored.
Okay, so starting with a joke about Epstein was a little risky, I’ll admit. But Nikki Glaser recovered fast by turning her attention to CBS itself. Honestly, that’s exactly what I love about her – she’s fearless. After years of killing it at those Comedy Central roasts, she didn’t hesitate to call CBS News “America’s newest place to see bs.” That’s a seriously bold move when the network is producing the show, but the audience absolutely loved it. She really knows how to read a room.
Glaser excels at making celebrities laugh by playfully acknowledging their status while still delivering sharp jokes. For example, she jokingly asked Clooney to inspect her Nespresso machine (he simply nodded) and teased Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson about his movie The Paper not receiving an award nomination. The joke – a playful reference to the game rock, paper, scissors – was a bit unexpected, but it worked, bringing the whole room together in a moment of lighthearted fun.
Leonardo DiCaprio rarely attends the Golden Globes, so when comedian Sarah Glaser targeted him with a joke, it felt intentional. She went for an obvious gag about his tendency to date women younger than 30, a joke that reminded people of similar ones made by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in 2014. DiCaprio visibly reacted, but Glaser didn’t stop there. She apologized, calling the joke “cheap” and explaining that his personal life is all anyone seems to know about him. Surprisingly, this apology actually made DiCaprio laugh. She then quickly shifted gears to a more risqué part of her monologue, playfully comparing the play Hamnet to Spanx and making a suggestive connection between Michael B. Jordan and the phrase “Nikki be jerkin’.”
Glaser skillfully turned the tables on the audience with a surprisingly sincere moment, expressing how honored she was to be among everyone present. She playfully told Noah Wyle he’s been her only doctor for 35 years, and sweetly advised Paul Mescal and Jacob Elordi to stay true to themselves, as her mom would appreciate. Glaser masterfully balanced funny jabs at the celebrities with genuine admiration for their work. By the time Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Garner took the stage to present the first award, the atmosphere was relaxed and cheerful – and for at least one future award winner, perhaps a bit too festive.
