As a gamer who grew up with the legendary creations of Nihon Falcom, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of Masayuki Kato‘s passing. His innovative spirit and unparalleled contributions to the gaming industry have left an indelible mark on my own life’s journey through virtual worlds.

Nihon Falcom recently issued a statement confirming the passing of Masayuki Kato on December 15. Born in 1946, Kato was the founder of the original Nihon Falcom company, making him 78 years old at the time of his death. The cause of his death has not been disclosed, as the company is honoring the wishes of Kato’s family for a private vigil and funeral.

In 1981, Masayuki Kato established the company known as Nihon Falcom. He ingeniously blended the name of the spaceship Millennium Falcon from Star Wars with “com” for Computers, resulting in the unique moniker “Falcom”. Kato was also instrumental in producing some of Falcom’s earliest games, including the initial Ys release in 1987, Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II in 1985, which later spawned its own series encompassing titles like Tokyo Xanadu, and the 1989 game Dragon Slayer VI: The Legend of Heroes. This latter title eventually evolved into a series that is now most recognized by the Trails (Kiseki) entries.

Starting from 2001 up until a company reorganization, Masayuki Kato held the role of president at Nihon Falcom. In that same year, Shinji Yamazaki took over as the new president. More recently, Toshihiro Kondo became the current president in 2007. Last December (2023), Masayuki Kato was appointed chairman of Nihon Falcom.

In Mr. Kato’s guidance, the three fundamental principles for crafting the background music in our video games were established. These principles emphasize the creation of melodies so captivating that they linger in one’s memory after the initial listen and inspire humming. Furthermore, the compositions should follow a coherent narrative structure, encompassing an introduction, progression, climax, and resolution. Lastly, the song’s main theme or hook should resonate powerfully at a critical moment.

Falcom Corporation shared that with Masayuki Kato’s passing, there is now one fewer member on their board of directors. Despite this reduction, the company still has an adequate number of members, surpassing the legal minimum requirement. Additionally, they have planned a farewell event to honor Mr. Kato, but have yet to disclose specific details such as the date and location for this occasion.
