Nigerian chef sets jollof rice world record as massive pot collapses under 20,000 pounds

Okay, so this is awesome! I just heard that Hilda Baci, a chef from Nigeria, totally crushed the world record for the biggest batch of jollof rice ever made! She cooked almost 20,000 pounds of it in Lagos – that’s insane! As a foodie and a gamer who loves a good challenge, I gotta say, that’s a seriously impressive feat.

Baci, a 28-year-old food influencer and previous Guinness World Record breaker, gained popularity in 2023 after cooking for 93 hours straight. Her latest feat involved a massive cooking effort using 8,800 pounds of rice, 500 cartons of tomato paste, 1,320 pounds of onions, and 370 pounds of goat meat. Everything was cooked in a specially made steel pot that could hold over 6,000 gallons of liquid.

It took two months and 300 people to build the large pot, but during the weigh-in, one of its legs failed, causing it to collapse. Luckily, Guinness World Records still confirmed that Baci and Gino successfully broke the record with a verified weight of 8,780 kilograms (19,356 pounds and 9 ounces) of jollof rice.

Hilda Baci and Gino have set a new world record for the largest serving of Nigerian jollof rice, weighing in at an incredible 8,780 kilograms (19,356 pounds, 9 ounces). The record-breaking feat took place in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria.

Baci breaks record and massive steel pot

Videos of the large pot wobbling quickly spread online, showing it leaning but amazingly not losing any rice. After the event, the record-setting amount of rice was split up and shared with everyone who attended.

A huge crowd came to watch the event, which required a year of preparation and the tireless work of ten chefs who cooked for about nine hours straight.

Afterward, Baci shared why she attempted the record: “Nigeria is a leading country in Africa, and jollof rice is a dish that’s widely associated with African cuisine. It would be a great achievement for the country to have the largest pot of jollof rice ever made.”

Baci gained national recognition in 2021 by winning a jollof rice competition, and then she broke the record for the longest cooking marathon. Although someone has since broken her marathon record, this new accomplishment has re-established her as a prominent figure internationally.
