Okay, so Yoko Taro – the guy behind Drakengard and NieR, which I absolutely love – hasn’t released a brand new game in a few years, not since the Voice of Cards games. But he says he has been working on stuff! Apparently, a lot of his projects just keep getting scrapped, which is super frustrating for him and, honestly, for us fans too!
Yoko Taro recently spoke at the G-CON 2025 video game convention in Korea, explaining that some of his latest projects unfortunately didn’t work out during their development, as reported by 4Gamer and Automaton.
People often ask me why there isn’t a new Nier game or what I’ve been up to lately. The reason is that I’ve been working on several projects that were unfortunately canceled before they could be released. I’ve still been busy and getting paid for my work, but because none of these projects have come out, it looks like I haven’t been doing anything at all.
Yoko didn’t say why his games were cancelled or what those games even were. He did mention he’d prefer a game be cancelled rather than released if it didn’t meet the quality of his past work.
Yoko Taro jokingly suggested in 2023 that the next Nier game might be released very soon or decades in the future. While Nier Reincarnation ended service in 2024, Yoko released two related novels that same year. Last year, Hiroyuki Kobayashi hinted at a new collaboration with Yoko and composer Keiichi Okabe. More recently, in early 2025, Yoko predicted that artificial intelligence could replace human game developers within 50 years.
