Nicole Kidman has several exciting projects lined up. In addition to a new erotic thriller and the return of the popular series Lioness by Taylor Sheridan, she’s also starring in a fresh crime show that’s sure to appeal to fans of the genre.
The new series Scarpetta will debut on Prime Video on March 11th, and the official trailer is now available to view. Based on the popular Kay Scarpetta book series by Patricia Cornwell—which currently includes 29 novels—Prime Video has already renewed the show for two seasons.
I’m so excited about this new show! It opens with Nicole Kidman returning as a medical examiner after being away for a while, and it’s clear she’s back with a mission. She basically says she didn’t feel good about how things ended last time, and now she’s diving into a really intense case – a serial killer! It looks absolutely gripping.
The unexpected bit? Her current case and her first-ever case have too many similarities.
A talented but haunted medical examiner is driven to speak for the victims she examines, determined to catch a serial killer and, in doing so, confront the truth about a pivotal case from her past that could either define or destroy her career.
The Scarpetta novels offer a realistic look into modern forensic science, but go further by exploring the minds of criminals and the detectives who hunt them. These complex thrillers examine the personal sacrifices made in the relentless pursuit of justice.
The novel Postmortem launched in 1990 and helped popularize crime dramas on television. It became a bestselling series, winning several awards. With crime shows like NCIS, Law & Order, Dexter, The Rookie, and Criminal Minds remaining incredibly popular, streaming services are now trying to replicate that success.
Prime Video recently tried out crime procedural dramas with shows like Countdown and Butterfly, but unfortunately, those were cancelled after only one season. Now, they’re trying the genre again with Scarpetta, and this time, the show is confirmed to run for two seasons.
As a crime drama fan, I see a lot of potential in Scarpetta. It definitely feels like it’s cutting from the same cloth as shows like CSI or Body of Proof, and especially Bones. If you were a Bones devotee, you’ll likely enjoy this – Dr. Kay Scarpetta is another incredibly skilled forensic expert, though she’s a pathologist and chief medical examiner, while Temperance Brennan specialized in anthropology. Both women are at the top of their game when it comes to solving crimes with science.
Both Temperance Brennan (Bones) and Kay Scarpetta are crime solvers who rely on scientific evidence and strong analytical skills. They’re known for being direct and logical, and each works alongside FBI agents: Bones partners with Special Agent Seeley Booth, while Scarpetta collaborates with profiler Benton Wesley.
Scarpetta debuts on Prime Video on Mar. 11.
