Nicolas Cage’s Indiana Jones Replacement Returns as a Hulu Streaming Hit

Before Disney owned Lucasfilm and the Indiana Jones films, they started their own action series starring Nicolas Cage. Now, after 22 years, that first movie is gaining popularity as a streaming success on Hulu.

The movie National Treasure features Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates, a treasure hunter and archaeologist on a quest for a legendary Freemason fortune. The clues to its location are hidden within the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, leading to a memorable scene where Gates famously announces his plan to steal the Declaration in the 2004 film.

National Treasure Has Stolen the Hearts of Hulu Subscribers

While Ben Gates is famous for stealing the Declaration of Independence in the movies, he’s recently ‘stolen’ over two hours of viewing time from Hulu users! The popularity of National Treasure caused it to climb into the top 10 most-watched shows on the streaming service this past week.

Currently, National Treasure is the fifth most popular movie on Hulu in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. It’s also ranked tenth overall among all titles on the streaming service.

More than twenty years after its initial release, National Treasure is finding success again, this time on Hulu. The adventure film originally earned nearly $350 million globally with a $100 million production cost, even though critics had varying opinions about it.

Because the first National Treasure movie did so well in theaters, Disney decided to make a sequel, which came out in 2007 as National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The second movie was even more successful, earning $459 million around the world on a budget of $130 million.

National Treasure 3 May Finally Be Happening

Because the National Treasure movies were still successful, Disney announced a third film in 2008. However, National Treasure 3 has faced numerous development issues and remains unreleased.

I was really excited when Disney tried to expand the National Treasure world with Edge of History on Disney+. It followed a fresh group of adventurers, and I was hopeful it would capture the same magic. Sadly, it didn’t really click with audiences, and after one season of ten episodes, Disney+ decided to cancel it. It’s a shame, but I’m still a huge fan of the original movies!

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer mentioned in March that a third film in the series is progressing nicely. Nicolas Cage is anticipated to return for the movie.

Ted Elliott is writing the script for National Treasure 3. He quietly contributed to the first National Treasure film and was officially credited for the story in Book of Secrets. Elliott is also famous for co-writing the first four Pirates of the Caribbean films for Disney.

While fans wait for Disney to greenlight National Treasure 3, Nicolas Cage continues to work on other films. His newest project, Spider-Noir, just came out this week on MGM+ and Prime Video and is getting some attention.

Nicolas Cage has two upcoming projects: a biopic titled Madden and a sequel called Lords of War, which follows his 2005 film Lord of War. Madden will be available on Prime Video in November, and Lords of War is currently in development.

National Treasure is available to stream on Disney+ or Hulu.
