At the 52nd annual Saturn Awards held at Universal City on Sunday, Nicolas Cage strongly expressed his disapproval of AI influencing acting, following his best actor win for “Dream Scenario”.
In his acceptance speech, Cage expressed gratitude for the recognition of ‘Dream Scenario’. He mentioned it as one of his favorite films he’s ever produced. He also thanked Kristoffer Borgli for his direction, scriptwriting, and editing, and for imagining the unsettling yet hilarious world portrayed in the movie, which was his dream.
However, another concern troubles me as well,” Cage went on. “It’s the rapidly advancing AI world we find ourselves in right now. I strongly oppose machines taking over our emotional experiences. Artificially intelligent systems can never truly capture the essence of humanity. If an artist allows an AI to influence their performance, even slightly, it could lead to a slippery slope where artistic integrity, sincerity, and truth are replaced by financial concerns. We must prevent that from happening.
In my opinion, the primary function of any art form, including film performances, is to reflect both the external events and the internal struggles of humanity by reenacting them in a thoughtful and emotional manner. Robots cannot accomplish this task because it requires genuine human emotions. If we allow robots to perform such tasks, they would lack emotion entirely, eventually becoming dull and lifeless. This would result in no more authentic human responses to life experiences, only responses programmed by robots. Life as we know it would be replaced with a version of life as robots perceive it.
“I say, protect yourselves from AI interfering with your authentic and honest expressions.”
During the Saturn Awards’ memorial tribute, Cage honored the late David Lynch. In his speech, he mentioned, “The energy in this room feels unique compared to other award ceremonies, and it brings to mind one of my most valued collaborators, David Lynch.” Recalling their work together on ‘Wild at Heart’, Cage shared, “As a serious young actor, I asked David if I could enjoy myself during the filming. He replied, ‘Not only is it acceptable, but it’s essential.’
In the science fiction, fantasy, and horror awards hosted by the Academy, Cage was nominated for two roles: Best Actor for “Dream Scenario” and Best Supporting Actor for “Longlegs.
In October, Cage expressed his thoughts on AI, mentioning that he fervently wishes the body scans performed for his latest creations like “Spider-Man Noir” won’t be utilized to replicate him following his demise.
He expressed his concerns by saying, ‘They’re planning to upload me into a computer, replicate my eye color, and make adjustments – something I’m unsure about. It feels like they’re going to take over my physical form using artificial intelligence, which terrifies me… I hope not AI. My fears are well-known… This situation makes me ponder, you know, what happens to the essence of artists? Will it be erased? Transformed? Where will the pulse of life be found? To put it bluntly, what will become of my body and likeness when I’m gone? I don’t want any manipulation of it!’
At the Saturn Awards ceremony, Joel McHale acted as the host, and they presented special accolades to William Shatner, “Back to the Future”, Laurence Fishburne, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
