Nick Reiner’s Lawyer Withdraws From the Case

Nick Reiner appeared in court today for a second time, but things didn’t go as expected. His lawyer, Alan Jackson – who has previously represented high-profile figures like Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey – announced he’s dropping the case. Jackson told the judge he felt they had no other option, according to the New York Times, but didn’t explain the reason. Now, public defender Kimberly Greene will take over Reiner’s defense, and a new court date is set for February 23.

I just read that Nick Reiner’s lawyer, Jackson, dropped him as a client right outside the courthouse, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, Jackson can’t say why he quit the case – something about things being out of his hands. But he did make a very direct statement, and I’m quoting him here because it’s important: ‘Pursuant to the law of California, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.’ He wanted that printed, and honestly, as someone who follows these cases closely, that’s a pretty bold thing to say.

According to a source familiar with the case, the Reiner family’s legal team initially brought Jackson on board. However, his departure wasn’t related to his work on the case. Joshua Ritter, a former colleague of Jackson’s, suggested to the L.A. Times that the issue may have been Jackson’s high fees, pointing out that to qualify for a public defender, individuals must demonstrate they cannot afford an attorney. The Reiner family, in a statement to the New York Times, expressed confidence in the legal process and declined to provide further comment.

Nick Reiner is accused of stabbing his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, to death in December. He faces severe charges – two counts of first-degree murder – which could result in a life sentence without parole, or even the death penalty. According to Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, prosecutors are confident a jury will find Reiner guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of the crime.
