The new animated movie, The Pout-Pout Fish, featuring the voices of Nick Offerman and Jordan Sparks, tells the story of two fish on a surprising journey to find someone who can make wishes come true. It’s natural to compare it to Pixar’s Finding Nemo, but The Pout-Pout Fish offers a very different experience.
I recently had the chance to chat with Nick Offerman, you probably know him from Parks & Recreation or his fantastic work in The Last of Us, about his role in The Pout-Pout Fish. We talked about how this movie stands apart from something like Finding Nemo, and what the most important takeaway for young viewers should be. He had some really thoughtful insights about the film’s message and how it connects with kids.
Offerman observed that Pixar’s Finding Nemo focuses heavily on Nemo’s personal journey, while The Pout-Pout Fish emphasizes the importance of community. He explained that the characters in their film all learn to embrace each other’s differences and collaborate as a team within their diverse community.
Offerman highlighted the film’s central message for younger viewers: everyone has unique talents and abilities, and those are always valuable, appealing, and needed, no matter what challenges life presents.
I just finished reading and watching TopMob’s awesome interview with Nick Offerman, who voices a character in The Pout-Pout Fish! If you’re excited about the movie, you’ll love it – and good news, it comes out March 20, 2026!
How The Pout-Pout Fish Differs From Finding Nemo

Acceptance Is Key to Nick Offerman’s New Film.
- TopMob: “When one thinks of an animated fish story, the mind goes to Finding Nemo, right? So with this film, what do you feel are some key differences and just unique qualities that this has compared to Nemo?”
Well, to really answer that, I’d need to watch ‘Finding Nemo’ again, as it’s been a while. But as I recall, ‘Finding Nemo’ was more about Nemo’s personal journey. This story, though, is more about community. Our main characters all have to learn to accept each other and work together, embracing the diversity around them, to improve things for everyone – like the whole coral reef. But honestly, I feel a little unprepared to talk about this!
Nick Offerman Reveals the Key Message Kids Should Take Away From The Pout-Pout Fish

No Matter Who You Are, “Your Skillset Is Valuable, Attractive, and Necessary.”
- TopMob: “At the end of the day, if kids take away one message from this film. What do you think that message should be?”
Nick Offerman believes everyone has something valuable to offer, no matter their talents or personality. He explains that people are diverse – some are outgoing and charismatic, while others are quiet and hardworking – and a strong community needs all kinds of skills and contributions.
Being married to someone as amazing as Megan Mullally can be intimidating, honestly. When I see her in the morning, then look at myself, it’s easy to feel a little insecure. But I’ve learned that focusing on being a good person – making breakfast, doing my work, and being nice to people – makes all the difference. Everyone treats me so well, and it reminds me that true beauty comes from within, not just how you look. It’s about feeling good about who I am, and thankfully, people respond to that.
