The medical drama *Chicago Med* is getting ready to reach a major TV milestone – its 200th episode – a feat very few shows achieve. To celebrate, Nick Gehlfuss will reprise his role as Will Halstead. The episode promises to be especially enjoyable for dedicated fans and those who recently tuned in for the Season 11 premiere. Gehlfuss recently discussed the landmark episode with TopMob, including connections to the character Connor and Will’s dynamic with Owen.
Episode 200, titled “A Game of Inches,” hints at a disruptive patient causing problems at the hospital. Given this, and the fact that Nick Gehlfuss is returning to *Med* for the first time since his character, Will Halstead, found happiness with Natalie, it seems his return will be anything but quiet. His reappearance in the milestone 200th episode isn’t a coincidence – expect some drama!
I asked him if he was aware his return for this significant event was planned when he agreed to rejoin the show for Season 11. He then shared that…
That’s right. Allen MacDonald, the showrunner, had mentioned he planned that, and I thought it was a really nice touch. The way he echoed elements from the first episode felt like a beautiful tribute to the series, and I was thrilled to be involved.
Allen MacDonald, the showrunner who watched all previous episodes before taking the lead last season, recently revealed he specifically wanted to bring the character Will back to the show. According to actor Jesse Gehlfuss, Will’s return will be a heartwarming experience for longtime viewers of the *One Chicago* franchise.

Years ago, Connor (Colin O’Donnell) arrived at the Gaffney emergency department covered in blood and dealing with the aftermath of a terrible train accident, all before Will had even started his new job at the hospital. When asked if Will might revert to old patterns when he returns to Med in Season 11, Gehlfuss shared a preview:
It was frustrating to see him take charge with a patient who wasn’t his, acting like he knew better than everyone else. But Allen did an amazing job echoing the themes of the very first episode all the way through the 200th, and all the writers contributed beautifully. They cleverly mirrored the dynamic between Will and Connor with Dr. Frost and Will, flipping the roles, which was a really clever touch. I just really appreciate that they did that.
Dr. Frost is new to the emergency department and didn’t know Will when he was still there, so it will be interesting to see how the other doctors – like Goodwin, Hannah, and Dr. Charles – react to him. However, Will isn’t traveling to Chicago alone.

It’s unclear if Torrey DeVitto will return as Natalie, but her son, Owen, will be with Will when he returns to Chicago. Nick Gehlfuss discussed the status of Will and Natalie’s relationship since they both left the show, and hinted that Owen is a key reason for Will’s return visit.
It likely benefits their relationship that Will and Natalie don’t work at the same hospital. However, right now, their biggest focus seems to be establishing their family dynamic. Will is struggling to connect with Owen, and unfortunately, I can’t share the details why just yet. This is also creating tension between him and Natalie. He came back to Chicago hoping for a weekend with Owen, but things quickly took an unexpected and dramatic turn.
It’s great to plan fun family weekends, but things rarely go smoothly in the ‘One Chicago’ universe! Owen hasn’t been to the hospital in a while, and it seems Will will be actively working instead of just showing his son around. Actor Nick Gehlfuss says that becoming a father to Owen is his main focus.
Right now, his main focus is learning to be a good father, especially with all the changes happening in his life. However, returning to the hospital pulls him back into his role as a doctor. While he’s still a skilled doctor, even in Seattle, the demands of the profession can take time away from his family.
Surprisingly, the trailer shows Owen returning to Gaffney before Will does—and thankfully, it’s not due to any illness or injury to Owen himself. Check it out:
