When the new Marvel series, Spider-Noir, arrives this spring, fans will face a choice, and Nicolas Cage, who stars in the show, knows what the right one is.
Spider-Noir offers a fresh spin on the Spider-Verse, featuring a gritty, detective-style Spider-Man who works as a private investigator.
Nicolas Cage previously voiced Spider-Noir in the animated film Into the Spider-Verse. Now, he’s taking on another Spider-Man role in the upcoming live-action series, playing the character Ben Reilly.
The main question for viewers is which version of the series to choose, as Spider-Noir will be available in both black and white and color at the same time on MGM+.

The colorful Spider-Man version feels like the classic, lively comics, but the black and white version evokes the style of old, dramatic films. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but Nic Cage actually has one!
Nicolas Cage explained to Esquire that he understood the decision to release the project in both color and black and white, as he’d actually suggested it initially. He recalled that Amazon was hesitant about using black and white, but he advised them they didn’t have to limit themselves, suggesting color would make it accessible to a wider audience of all ages.
Those new to black and white photography might appreciate the color versions, which are lovely. However, I personally found myself captivated by the black and white images.
Cage explained his choice, saying it aligned with his vision for a film noir. He also noted that both versions – color and black and white – are visually appealing in their own ways. He believes the vibrant colors will especially resonate with younger audiences, but he wanted to offer viewers a choice.
Showing them older films might spark their interest and help them appreciate classic movies as an art form, especially if they’re used to modern, color films.

One of the show’s creators, Oren Uziel, explained that the color scheme is different from most Marvel series and was difficult to achieve. He described it as resembling an old black and white movie that’s been partially colorized, which was a key idea behind the visual approach.
Esquire learned how the show achieved its vintage look. Unlike older colorization techniques which added color to black and white footage, the show filmed everything digitally. Then, the footage was split and converted into both color and black-and-white versions.
They carefully adjusted the settings, producing a vibrant, rainbow-colored effect that still felt nostalgic and reminiscent of the past.
