NHL to Run Animated Versions of Recent Games for Young Viewers

The National Hockey League will test an animated recap show aimed at young fans and families.

Each week, the highlight of NHL Hockeyverse is a 30-minute animated show that reenacts a game from the previous week using digitally created players whose movements are based on real positional data. The inaugural episode, set to air in Canada on Sportsnet and in the U.S. on NHL Network, as well as on the NHL YouTube channel, will recap the January 25 match between the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals. This special event will debut on February 1 at 9 a.m. ET on NHL Network, and at 12 p.m. ET on Sportsnet. Subsequent episodes are expected to air every Saturday moving forward.

Through the employment of avatars, lively animations, and energetic commentary, NHL Hockeyverse Matchup of the Week aims to strengthen the bond between young fans and families, as well as bolster the League’s recent successes in nationwide and local animated broadcasts, according to David Lehanski, the league’s executive vice president of business development and innovation. This exciting program is set to air on Sportsnet and NHL Network, allowing us to continue utilizing NHL Edge Positional Data, captivate both new and existing young fans in Canada and the United States, and provide more innovative and distinctive ways for people to engage with our beloved sport.

In recent years, many sports networks and leagues have been trying out kid-friendly and family-oriented formats as a strategy to attract younger audiences and create long-term fans. For instance, ESPN (owned by The Walt Disney Company) started experimenting with animated versions of real NHL games in 2023, incorporating characters from the popular cartoon series “Big City Greens.

As a devoted hockey fan, I’m thrilled about the innovative approach the NHL is taking with their “Hockeyverse” telecasts. Instead of the traditional indoor arena setup, they aim for an immersive outdoor environment that makes you feel like you’re right there on the ice. Unique camera angles will bring us closer to the heart-pounding action than ever before. And here’s something exciting: teenage commentators are set to take over the play-by-play! I can’t wait to see these young talents in action and gain a fresh perspective on the game.

This week’s exciting NHL match-up is being created by NHL Productions, working together with Sony’s Beyond Sports.
