Vancouver Canucks player Jake DeBrusk admits his unusual hobby has led to some teasing from teammates.
The 28-year-old player said his teammates have been playfully teasing him since a video from August appeared online showing him spending over $1,000 on Pokemon cards.
DeBrusk explained to Daily Hive that as soon as the story was filmed, he wasn’t sure if it would become popular quickly or take years to gain traction, but ultimately, it spread everywhere almost immediately.
I’m finally ready to share something I’ve been working on. It started as a small side project, a way to earn some extra money, and it’s been interesting to see how people respond.

NHL pro says teammates look at him “differently” over Pokemon cards
The Canucks playfully embraced the situation by making a fun video with DeBrusk while golfing, but he’s the only player on the team who actually collects hockey cards.
The hockey player admitted people now see him differently. He feels like he’s lost some respect, and he’s working to regain it.
DeBrusk says his attempt to make amends now involves paying for things like coffee and team lunches. He joked, “I’m starting to wonder if I’m just paying for everything now, and it’s a little weird, to be honest.”
Gotta catch ’em all! 👀

Though he’s only been collecting for around six months, the Edmonton resident was surprised by the attention his collection received.
It remains to be seen if his love for Pokémon will impress his teammates or improve his performance, much like how NBA player Luka Dončić often plays better basketball when a new season of Overwatch 2 is released.
The famous basketball player has consistently ranked among the top 500 players in Overwatch 2, and Blizzard acknowledged his dedication to the game by creating a special in-game event in his honor.
