It appears as though the PS5 and Xbox Series X were launched only recently, yet it seems that Microsoft is already setting sights on the following generation of hardware. According to a report from Jez Corden at Windows Central, “the hardware for Xbox’s next-gen console” has progressed beyond its initial proposal phase, implying that it has been given the green light by management for further development stages.

There’s some uncertainty about when exactly this new console may be unveiled and launched, but it seems that Microsoft has a definite plan for its upcoming console. Microsoft officials have repeatedly stated that their next console will represent the “greatest technical leap” ever between hardware generations, which is quite a claim considering the Xbox Series X is already the most powerful console currently available.

Microsoft Gaming Chief Executive Officer Phil Spencer hinted that the upcoming Xbox console should be more inventive in design, but specific details are yet to emerge. Microsoft has maintained its cross-platform approach, with the exclusive title Indiana Jones and the Great Circle scheduled for release on PS5 next spring. Analysts suggest that major franchises such as the upcoming Gears of War or Perfect Dark could potentially appear on the PS5 due to Xbox’s declared strategy. Conversely, Sony’s latest State of Play event unveiled Saros, a forthcoming game by Housemarque (the creators of Returnal), and Days Gone Remastered.
